Subject choice 2014 HSC, Geography or Economics? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,
I have a bit of a subject choice dilemma on my hands and I would be forever grateful if anyone could help me out.
We had to select our subjects before the yearlies and I chose

• Maths Ext 1 and 2
• English Advanced
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Economics

Now last week we got our results back and they have affirmed all of my choices except one.
Economics. I didn't do badly at all, in fact i did quite well (66/80 for a rank around 20 I am predicting) its more that i did
very well in Geography (69/80 for a rank of around 10, again just prediction that I'm quite confident about)
And well now my geo teacher is begging me to do geo next year. She has kind of talked me into it I mean I am doing very
work intensive subjects so maybe geography could give me a bit of a break instead of economics which i have found to contain
a lot of work.
Just in case its important, my school rank is around 10 or so.
Thanks to anyone who gives up their time to answer this, as said above I'm a bit desperate for some good advice and would very grateful!

Well I can't dispute that the workload for Geography is much lower than Economics.

What are you looking to do in uni?

I'm really not sure to be honest. I have been thinking maybe medicine?
But at the moment i just want to keep my options open.

If you might want to do medicine, then you'll keep THIS option open by getting as high an ATAR as possible.
Economics scales MUCH better than Geography.

The average mark per unit required to get an ATAR of 99 flat will be achieved in Geography by getting in the top 2% of the state, and in Economics by getting in the top 6% of the state.

I'd stick to economics, yeah you have to work harder but it pays off.

Then again, it really depends on what you like to learn about. I have a friend who wants to do Med but he chose economics as a back up just in case.

Wow! you have really good subjects. All the best, I would stick to economics

Do economics if you are good at, scales pretty well.

I wanna give up on geog right now, 1 month from HSC, my teacher is making us write one essay a day. I can't keep up, considering I'm doing 12 units and have ext 2 maths.

Id say go for geo, eco is extremely work-intensive and you wont want to be doing all the work, especially since your other subjects will also require a huge amount of work.

Hahaha really? I really enjoyed geo before I dropped it (the only topic I didn't do was mega cities) - and I only dropped it because I was doing too many units

I would keep both for now - try them out in Year 12 for a bit to get a better perspective in each. In some subjects, you might find that you enjoy the HSC course more/less than the Prelim course.

Oh gosh it's so true. I did geo in year 12 and it was ok, but they really need to upgrade the freaking syllabus! I think it was updated in 2000? I mean it's been 10 years! Do what you want - geography will be easier but I wouldn't say the workload would be less - a lot of rote learning is required. Personally, it had equal if not more work than biology - so it's content heavy, but very easy to understand. Also depends on what options you do - we did really interesting ones so that helped but a lot can be freaking boring. So have a look at both of the syllabuses and see which one interests you the most. If your more into understanding rather than rote learning then I'd go with economics. But it's up to you.

Half the syllabus gives you dot points with 1-2 words to work with, so broad.
Furthermore there are just crap dot points ie. intrinsic value, culture of place.

A lot of dot points are kinda repeated in a similar manner. Essentially the geog syllabus tries to confuse the shts out of you.
Too much content to know considering that the 2 extended responses could be anything.

Um guise have you seen other subjects?!? Geo has a lot less content than most subjects and is easier to understand.

Just keep them til the first assessment and see how you go I guess.
