Subject Choices (1 Viewer)

My Yr11 subject selections are due soon and I am still unsure on my final 2 units.

So far I am sure of:3U Math
Eng Advanced
Physics
Chemistry
Studies of Religion 1 unit

Now thats 10. I want to do one of these: IPT
Engineering Studies
Ancient History

I have a general interest in these areas and I have heard IPT scales not to well.

Any thoughts on these would be appreciated.​

depends on wat scool u go to
is studies of religion compulsory at ur scool; catholic?
if ur good at maths n like all that equaitons n stuff then engineering
history aint a bad subject but i hear theres a lota essay writin involved
ipt is good if u hav a teacher that can explain well, if not u screwed

I've been advised that people should ignore scaling and choose the subjects they are most interested in or are good at. I think engineering scales the best out of those 3. If it were me I'd choose engineering because the other subjects don't interest me but it's your choice

however in IPT you manage to get excellent marks in the assessments and hsc and actually be in the top 5% of the class like me the poor scaling will be negated.

if you would like to get into engineering you may consider engineering studies to get you ahead across more subjects in uni, but IPT also gets you ahead in computing at uni, maybe for one semester.

avoid ancient history that isnt even relevant.

There is some good advice given by the earlier posters but an alternative view can't hurt:

You have a lot of Maths/Science type subjects so doing History would give you a change of pace in the type of things you will be doing.

Ancient had a lot of reading involved (what history doesn't), has a lot of writing but is different from the Sciences etc.

I have had a number of students in my Ancient classes over the years whose other subjects, like yours have been the Maths/Science/Computer type subject and they have enjoyed Ancient due to the different nature of the subject giving them a break from the type of learning happening in other subjects. It also allowed them to come into greater contact with other students in their grade who weren't into the Science subjects as well.

I know English is there but I am only commenting on my experience and to give you another way of thinking.

Don't worry about the scaling as you can't do anything about it and it is determined AFTER your cohort has actually done the exams not on a standard thing so it could be different for your cohort than in the past.

Doing what you enjoy will make you happier and more interested in studying the material and thus will help you to do well and thus negate some of the perceived poor scaling of some subjects.

Pick any of the three- if you choose one, and decide you don't like it, you can always change up to a certain point in first term.

i agree with aquawhite it might be better to choose engineering or ipt as they are both practical and have a closer link with your other choices

i wouldn't rlly worry about scaling, one subject out of all of them probably won't make too much of a difference

if you really cant decide try thinking about your future aspirations like ATAR aim or uni course?

I'd have to disagree with Engineering Studies being a more practical subject. I am currently doing it for my HSC. It's a common mistake that people think Engineering Studies is very practical but it's actually very theory based.

omg k when i do solids in 2nd year how much do labs contribute to my understanding?
at least i get to see the stresses and strains in action omfg.
but much of engineering in uni is theory.

Oh yes, I didn't mean actual practical things in class... I was referring that it had more practical applications in careers and it would help more toward a university course.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I am aiming for an ATAR of about 95.
My choice between Engineering Studies and IPT will probably be deceided on what runs at my school!

Also, is 12 units good or should I add 1 unit to reach 13?
For HSC I plan to drop a 2 unit subject and add 1 unit of Math. So 11 units for HSC.

There are not really any prerequisites =\ when I checked on like UNSW website it just says english, but then i guess they recommended either chemistry or biology in some section.

i know it scales bad but meh
