For example i heard you can do accounting even with general maths (apologises if that fact is wrong), although i'm not stating that i want to pursue a career in accounting, just giving an example. It's very hard to pick either modern or pdhpe. I have same passion, same skill, although I kind of dislike/ would rather not be writing essays 24/7. This doesn't mean i hate writing essays, I just prefer not to write them. It's really just the knowledge i have of history that excels me to the top. Meanwhile with pdhpe, I don't really like science (heard that pdhpe involves science). This basically, for me, brings it to a 50/50.
Well to be honest there'll probably be no real benefit either way if you do or don't do General Mathematics when it comes to university courses. University courses, when it comes to a lower level of maths, will generally have it as a recommendation and you can usually learn such maths through free services at the university. It only really becomes a prerequisite for some higher level of maths. I mean really the only way General Mathematics will help you much in university is if you're doing a course that has some basic statistics.

As for Modern History or PDHPE, it seems it comes down to which one you feel you have a better capability of doing well in. However you saying that you prefer not to write essays might mean you should go for PDHPE, since before I was under the impression you were neutral with them.

Honestly, i'm just doing Mathematics for the sake of having it on my HSC paper. I don't necessarily want to pursue anything to do with mathematics.

Then don't do maths? No point doing something for the sake of just having it I guess

Re: Subject Selection for year 11 & 12

But they aren't interested in pursuing accounting anyways. But I barely hear people say they want General Maths kids, it would be extremely hard for them as they don't have the basic skills of just 2U itself, and not even close to the level of 3U.

But then again, we have people like Drifting who rapes that theory
Most courses require 2u as min. It seems that op doesn't have a particular course in mind, so it's safer to do 2u maths then drop down if he can't handle it. Tbh Gen maths will only benefit you short term unless op wants to run off with some artsy course or something that doesn't require maths
edit: OK op doesn't want to do maths related course, laggy internet

Basically i'm not going to do anything maths related. Although i guess that you need mathematics in every day life. IF i didn't do maths, i would probably replace it with PDHPE and it would do me fine tbh.

Don't do General Mathematics then frankly. If you're just doing it for the sake of having it on your HSC paper you might not allocate enough effort to the subject and an average General Mathematics mark can pull down your ATAR. Sounds like to me you'll be better without because you can also do both Modern History and PDHPE as a result.

What i meant was that i'm doing general mathematics for later work, perhaps if you need a sound knowledge of mathematics. I should have worded "for the sake of having it on my hsc paper" better.

Also i'm not sure how far my subjects can get me in life without math.

Look I know the HSC seems like a pretty important thing and in some ways it is, but in some ways it isn't. Regarding the future, if you're not at all interested in doing anything mathematics related in university, then your ATAR is going to be the main predictor to whether you'll get into a certain course, not the subjects you do. Few courses require actual prerequisites in HSC subjects. Assumed knowledge or recommended subjects are not the same as prerequisites.

Furthermore, the usefulness of General Mathematics (unless the syllabus has changed in recent years) is limited in to basic statistics and everyday finance such as calculating interest and tax. Like I said before, you've already said a few times that you're not interested in doing anything mathematics related in university, so I'm not too sure what you're referring to for "getting you somewhere in life." If you're talking about adult life skills such as paying for fees and all the other things that come from that, you're not going to learn that from doing a HSC subject. It's something you should be learning from your own initiative.

All in all I completely understand if you end up taking General Mathematics because it makes you feel more assured about things - and it can be the ATAR booster if you do well in it. But you'll have to make sure to keep up the work. :)

Thanks for the advice. I will consider whether doing maths or not. :)

I'm confused about this OP LOL.

General maths is known for its "real life maths" but I think it's just a waste of time if you are just doing it for no particular reason (reasons being its either something you see important and needed, it's something you're good at, or its your passion).

Hahaha I'm confused with myself. Now i'm considering doing mathematics since i guess it's much more beneficial and maybe down the track i might want to do something with commerce since i enjoy the course. I don't mind putting in more effort.

Don't do General Mathematics just for doing a ''mathematics subject''. Honestly 2 unit mathematics is probably the minimum level you need to pursue science/commerce degrees.

Honest question here. Is 2 unit math difficult for a person who is above average in math?

Also a quick question. Is 2 unit math the equivalent of advanced english?

If you did 5.3 then definitely do 2 unit mathematics.

2 unit isn't equivalent to Advanced English vs Standard English

General Mathematics is completely different to the subject!

I sucked at 5.3 (because I was lazy and because I'm not great at Maths).

Now I'm rekting in 2U where my lowest has been 90%. But my 3U is a 65% - 98% (depends on how difficult the exam is)

Depends on how much effort you want to put into the course. In any course in the HSC, you can't just do nothing and expect to get the top of the grade (obviously except the prodigies).

And as previously stated by heaps of other people, mathematics and general maths are completely different courses, for different people. If you want to do anything that requires higher maths then doing general maths would be to your disadavantage- although I guess you could take a bridging course but then you're spending money, and all the knowledge you need to know is crammed in 5-10 days- which is ridiculous IMO.
