SUPGUYS!

Couldn't find a 'suggestions board' at first glance (so move this there if there is one, my bad). My suggestion is simple and relates to pretty much every popular board on BoS. Stickies.

I mean, I agree with stickies for important threads ya-da-ya-da-ya-da but why do some boards have like 10+ stickies? I've frequented many forums (non-educational and educational) that have many more members than BoS, and they tend to moderate their stickies to like 5-6 MAX. Even the dead VCE boards (a different issue, why was there like a death in 07/08 lol?) have like 8-10 stickies and next to no-one even uses them!

Now why I say this is simple (I'm going to be blunt), by having too many stickies:
- the moderation team looks like they don't know what is important and what isn't as half the page is stickied
- the users ignore them because there are simply too many and they lose their original meaning
- it's not aesthetically pleasing to look at (if that makes sense)

Just something I found very noticeable and thought you guys should know about as it really does lower the overall standard of this forum.

Cheers.

Um.....to be honest, I'm not sure what I can see without any particular examples. Which forums are you referring to?

Sorry, should have put in some examples, to take the popular maths HSC board:
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=12 -> 12 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=13 -> 9 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=14 -> 10 stickies

And correct me if I'm wrong, but a few of those stickies are repeated in all boards, is this necessary? It just looks really cluttered imo.

Other boards? Sure.
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=44 -> 11 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=17 -> 7 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=953 -> 7 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=2 -> 8 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=110 -> 8 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=332 -> 10 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=115 -> 9 stickies
http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=133 -> 9 stickies (including a cycling thread? WTF who cares about cycling?)
Even the 'dead' VCE spesh board has 7 stickies (most of which aren't even relevant for a 2012 cohort): http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=417
...etc. I think point is proven tbh.

Sorry if it seemed I was having a go at the mods before, I think I was just being a little too blunt :)

Perhaps even merging some of the stickied topics together?

Yes, we've already started this on some forums. It'll take a while to roll out across the board though, because some mods are less active than others.

Merging sticky topics isn't a good idea; because they are merged by timestamps, it's just not going to make any sense reading through them.

But if you do merge them, make them a global sticky/announcement, but restrict them to the maths forum, or which ever forums you need. That way, it's just the one topic visible for 5 forums.

We'd only be merging threads that would maintain a logical flow after merging.

SUPMODS!

I think making a "General Resources" thread in each board (that is stickied) with separate links on that thread to all the other current stickies would be more appropriate. You could also have a couple of other topics stickied (maybe the really really useful ones or ones about sub-forum rules). That looks a lot neater imo.

For example, for http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=12
You could have a sticky titled: "BoS HSC Mathematics Resources" or something similar
Inside that thread (give it a pretty title inside too) you could have a hyperlinked* list:
- A Short Guide to LaTeX
- A Comparison of Textbooks
- Graphmatica
- Attention: General Maths and 2 Unit Maths Students
- 2 Unit Revising Marathon
- Maths Formulae
- Important Links
- Ultimate Guide to HSC Mathematics
- Studying for Maths
- A few random tips

Other stikies on that page (not on the above thread as these are not study related):
Rules and Regulations
Please read before posting.

*Obviously you just un-sticky the threads in that list, so that the user can use the main link to go back to them if they want to

How's that as an idea?? Looks a lot neater, no merging, all posts make sense, general win at foruming :)
