I think your additional material really make your essay different and make the difference in terms of marks. AS such, because it's still early, I'd suggest you'd try to find material that is your OWN if possible, however I found the material suggestions are good for looking at what TYPES of material and things are good for the module, but ultimately i'd say, since you have the chance, really take the opportunity to read widely and find texts that you're personally passionate about.

I think your additional material depends on what argument your having or what reading you have of the set texts, there are no set in stone definitions of what material would suit which texts, it all depends on your personal view of them.

Pretty much all the ones above have been suggested by people who used them. Notes on texts (both prescribed and some additionals) are avaliable through BOS Resources.

I watched fight club and thats really full of RFTG ideas and techniques...from the part at the beginning where the camera pans around the apartment and price tags/ikea description come out of the furniture to the line "You're all working jobs you hate for shit you don't need"...Was a good movie i thought.

Yes it is good for RFTG, but remember if you looking to distinguish yourself, as much as people say it depends on how you use it, Fight Club is still a really common choice as additional material. I don't know, up to you, but there is so much out there, it'd be good to have the chance to choose something original. Like my friend made a brilliant argument out of the movie K*Pax, there was just so much in it. I feel the focus of the unit is on the way in which we define the local and the global and how they interact. Does the local exist temporally or spatially? Is the local just a state of mind?

Personally I thought K*pax (movie look it up on google) was awesome because you have this layering. This guy from out of space (one level of global) comes to earth (would be considered an insular, fairly local community) is then forced into a mental institute where we see another world, another local community. So we have this idea that, well it's all about perspective and the local is really a means of defining who you are, so the alien's local (Kevin Spacey - also ironically plays Quoil from The Shipping News) is his identity as an alien, that is what he clings to when confronted with the foreign and expansive world he must face. There are just so many ways to interpret any text depending on how you look at the local-global distinction (which I think should hardly be binary - but is far more complex a relationship).

I've been having a bit of trouble with RFTG as I went overseas and missed a big chunk of the work, but Radiohead have a lot of good material. As someone has previously said, Fake Plastic Trees makes for great material, which is what I'm using, but the whole Radiohead CD 'OK Computer' is really relevant. Even if you don't use it as your related material, it makes for great study music for this topic.

Im new here but yeh, Im doing LSGOB also, its pretty alright, I enjoyed a couple of them, and did an 10minute speech on 'The Tuning of Perfection and it was great! Well great as far as school goes..

Two things... first one keeping on the topic...

1. Do u know any good Quotations I could use as a source relating to The Shipping News, LSGOB and The Castle?

2. Are you allowed to use say.. Seamus Heaney.. as a related source if its not one of ur texts?

Also, could someone explain to me how to approach this using the LSGOB and The Shipping News:
Do the texts in the Elective you have studied promote conformity or rebellion ? To what purpose ?
Examine the ways in which composers deal with these ideas. In your answer draw on your knowledge of at least TWO of the prescribed texts from your Elective as well as other texts of your own choosing.

Teachers seem to prefer the 'darker' texts. Once Were Warriors (Brown) and Disgrace (Coetzee) both work really well in the elective.

hey the non fiction novel The Olive Grove by Patrice Newell is a good text to use. She used to work in media - news broadcaster or something like that - then she moved to a farm to grow olives. Sounds cliche i know but it talks about some good values like family, effect of global on the local aborigines, appreciation of food, global ideas forcing farmers to relent in order to keep up with demands etc. i used it for an assignment and it worked out really well.

I actually saw the weeping camel in cinemas....god I'm sad....

Does anyone think they'll be penalised for using common RFTG texts (in my case, specifically, big yellow taxi) if their argument and examples are relatively original and well-expressed? I'm worried that a lamp goes off in the head of some of the stupider markers when they see the same supplementary texts...
