but in the end good old sydney came through
When I went to the UNSW open day and walked in the lecture rooms etc I got the worst headache, everything is just too cramped, condensed I couldn't work in that environment.

Even the free food didn't help

When I went to sydney my headache disappeared, was more spaced out, and definitely a workable environmment for me. I was stuck between commerce/science at USyd or UNSW, but atmosphere and my instinct is what drove me to syd uni.

I went to UNSW and USYD info days and i am planning to do commerce/arts. both Uni's have well respected commerce degrees and are similar in outline but what made me choose USYD was the atmosphere and the general feel of the university.

yeah the dean of commerce @ Usyd told me that the commerce programs at both Uni's have the same level of respect, so it really comes down to how well you do in your course.

I agree what it comes down to is how hard you are willing to work, and how well you do, the uni you go to whether syd or NSW thus becomes irrelevant.

i.e. the environment you study in, I reckon that makes a huge difference to your success.

The physical environment does play a big role in how well you do and the type of experience you encounter at university. . .and sydney has this laid back feeling but not to the extent of it being a lazy university. . .it still has it's academic standards

i came from a school where i did all me HSC exams in the Hall, but the hall had dark brown walls and i swear it had some affect on my ability to answer the exam questions:)

Yeah I agree, sydney just has a more open atmosphere to it, whereas NSW seems very closed and claustorophobic (so much so that I got a headache on the UNSW info day).

If any uni has a closed and claustraphobic atmosphere to it, its uts. I never liked the look or feel of that big concrete tower, so I never seriously considered going there (that and the fact that they didnt have the course that I wanted) But my school had a really dodgy feel to it, so hopefully it wont affect me that much at unsw:rolleyes:

Is UTS just a tower building?

ok, from what I've read about and learnt if you aren't really sure about what you want to do (but have an idea of the general field you want to be in), then you should go to USyd, because it is much more flexible and as the years progress you begin to specialise as you become more aware of what you want to do. It is also easier to transfer between faculties should you change your mind about what you want to major in.

UNSW is far more specific and for those who know exactly what they want to major in, eg actuarial studies, or accounting etc. It is also very difficult to transfer between faculties and you are basically "locked into" your degree and the electives that are offered.

both have highly reputable degrees in areas such as commerce, science, so in effect what it really comes down to is your performance in your degree.

In terms of environment, if you don't mind studying in a manufacturing plant then go to UNSW but if you like an open spacious environment with a laid back feel go to USyd.

And as for extracurricular activities, USyd has more on offer.

And as for employment prospects and graduate salaries what it really comes down to is how good you are, not how good the uni is. And the fact that both USyd and UNSW are both prestigious means that they are in essence equal, and it comes down to the performance in your degree, how well you perform in the interview, and how well you can apply yourself to the work.

As for the good guides, I think they are a load, I question the accuracy of their information and their sources.

That is soooooo biased. Whenever there is something good about USyd, you say it. But if there is something good about UNSW, you either don't mention it, or question it's truthfulness.

The fact that so many asians who are smart and study commerce at UNSW would mean it is more competitive and harder to obtain a better grade as compared to sydney.
I would really question atleast half the things mentioned in that statement.

ok maybe I shouldn't have made that statement, sorry, I take it back, hence the reason why i edited my previous post :D I got a little carried away. btw I'm half-taiwanese and have many chiense friends so I have nothing against asians.

I don't believe I'm being biased in terms of the degrees on offer at both UNSW and USyd, I believe they are both good and carry equal weighting amongst employers.

However I will say that I think Usyd has a much better environment in which to study upon visiting both uni open days.

Hope that seems slightly less biased :D

Having spent the past year at USyd, I'll point out a few things.

- The luscious, rolling grounds, complete with Harry-Potter-style castle, are very nice.
- The excessive number of pompous and arrogant students are not. :)

From what I've seen, UNSW is much more of a 'friendly' and 'fun' university. Even if it's just in the little things (I saw an assignment page which had a section outlining bonus things students could do to achieve more than 20/20).

ok, much better now. Lets be friends! :D

Oh, and any UNSW people, come to O-Week. Ot's the best O-Week of all the uni's in Australia. It's also where half your union fees go so if you don't go then you're not picking up all this "free" stuff that you've already paid for.

I could tell you, but that would ruin the surprise!

You get a bag full of stuff when you go on a tour, plus there are things here and there that you can pick up for free (BBQ's + other food, outdated magazines, accessories like water bottle, etc). There are lots of activities, horizontal bungy, that old gladiators game with the giants ear swabs, jumping castle, giant sumo and more. Oh, and Greg Fleet and Groove Terminator (he wants to be called GT) will both be there.
