Looks reasonably balanced and contemporary. But I don't like the name "Mathematical Methods" for one of the subjects. Reminiscent of the university maths courses taken by students majoring in Psychology, Biological Sciences, the Social Sciences and the like; suggestive of a watered-down maths course.

All maths involve mathematical methods; so imo it is an unimaginative and unfortunate name.

true, ive heard the names were taken from the VCE?

i guess:
K-10=oversimplified;
and 11-12:
essential=idiotic applied maths (non-ATAR perhaps?)
general=wordy maths same as NSW (scaled down FTW!)
methods=2U (couldn't think of another name i suppose)
specialist=3/4U (and some 4U is taken out)

In what year will the new national Yr 11 and 12 curriculum first be taught to Year 11 students?

between 2011-13 the curriculum will be "implemented" which basically means trialled across the country.

so idk, this will be a very flexible process across the state.

Bill Pender has told the Board of Studies to reject the national curriculum.

They responded by saying "The Board advises all schools to continue to use the existing NSW K–12 syllabuses for 2011.":

Personally I like the current HSC syllabuses for 2U-4U, I don't know why they should change it... but that's my opinion only I think

Maybe some slight modifications would be good, but I don't think changing it majorly if that good of an idea.

the NSWBOS prior to national curriculum attention 2009-10 had developed draft syllabuses to replace the current 2U, 3U and 4U syllabuses.

They were called:

Mathematics Advanced
Mathematics Extension 1
Mathematics Extension 2

Personally i had a look at them and they were decent ie. better than both the current NSW and the proposed ACARA syllabuses.

Naturally this proposed update was erased from the Board's website after the national curriculum proposals started to come in.

What a shame.

ok, replaced erased with archived. its not on the syllabus page anymore though - which obviously means they have no intention of moving forward because the (victorian) national curriculum seems to be taking over.

my point is that nsw was making good progress with maths. better than what is being proposed now anyways.

NSW should decine this national curriculum until it is up to speed with our current worldclass one.

and i +1 a previous comment saying that 'mathematical methods' is poorly named.

I completed ACARA's survey yesterday and repeated in it everything I said at the K-10 forum at Burwood Girls' High School on May 1.

i agree. all non-calculus maths courses should be non-ATAR.

I think that 2U maths should be compulsory. But this is only because English is compulsory, so yeah...

it wasn't arrogant. it was bold. i would make the compromise that, using the national curriculum as an example, general maths could be ATAR but essential should be treated like applied ie. non-ATAR.

2U has calculus in it. that's as far as i was going.

I think that 2U maths should be compulsory. But this is only because English is compulsory, so yeah...

lol. BUT under the national curriculum will english be compulsory in all states + territories? lack of consistency needs to be addressed or else the curriculum will fail to be national.

The draft K-10 was released on March 1 and the draft 11-12 was released on May 14 both of which are at

Consultation for the K-10 closed on May 30 and consultation on the 11-12 will close on July 30.

The final documents are expected to be published later in 2010.
