So is it bad for the battery if I unplug the tablet/phone from the charger when it's not fully charged ?

It will reduce the life of the battery so yes.

From my understanding, there is no immediate detrimental effect if you unplug early, but a battery's life-span is partially determined by its charge cycles.

The less you need to charge, the better. If you unplug early, then naturally you have to recharge sooner.

yes will shorten lifespan but not by much, don't charge all the time (whenever u fall below 100%), a full battery drain and recharge is a healthy option to prolong the lifespan of the battery, overcharging and consistently charging when not necessary will drop battery life, so what originally was 100%=10hrs might equal 100%=8hrs
