Best time to buy textbooks is after your first few lectures. Sometimes UoS co-ordinators put up a certain textbook on the reading list which never gets used. Often the lecturer clarifies if the textbook is necessary for your UoS in the first lecture. Obviously if you want to get a head start to reflect on the content within your various UoS, by all means purchase them now but be warned they may not be used.

Generally you can't get HECS for summer schools, as they're DFEE courses rather than CSP courses.

Pros: you get ahead in your degree
Cons: cost, less holidays, possibly intensity of teaching?
