The Best and Most Accurate ATAR Calculator? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I'm trying to see how well I need to go in my respective subjects to achieve a certain ATAR, as well as what subjects if I improved in would "boost" my ATAR more so than others. What ATAR calculator would you guys recommend? I like the look of the talent 100 calculator (http://www.talent-100.com.au/atar-calculator/#welcome) but I'm not sure how accurate it is, and I don't understand the results at the end (if I break it down, it doesn't just give me the ATAR, rather it displays the "ATAR equivalent" next to each subject which confuses me).

Looks like matrix doesn't have 2015 yet? Talent 100 seems to I think? Just used talent 100 and it was very close to my actual ATAR. .40 off.

What you're looking at is probably the raw mark required. Talent 100 also has a reverse atar calc that shows the marks that would net you that ATar.

I don't think you quite understand how these calculators work.


You enter in a HSC mark and it gives you a scaled mark. The scaled marks are added up to give you an aggregate. The aggregate is lined up with a corresponding ATAR, giving you your estimate.

But where does the HSC to scaled mark conversion come from? Where does the aggregate to ATAR conversion come from?

They come from data in the previous year. It takes in the data from Page 35, i.e. the scaled and HSC mark. But it only gives 6 points, so the calculators interpolate (and extrapolate) the points to cover all HSC marks. But this leads to inherent errors in the calculation because multiple HSC marks can give the same scaled mark, and the HSC to scaled marks conversion is not linear. So the ATAR calculators have to estimate - variance between calculators stems from how it interpolates the values between the points.

More importantly, this is data for the previous year. It has zero impact on your HSC.
