The Crucible- what should be talked about? (1 Viewer)

Im doing The Crucible at school & my teacher wont let me use one of the related texts ive picked. she says it doesnt address how people are able to do certain things because of being part of a group/belonging.

she says that this is what Arthur Miller was addressing and i need to find a text that has this. but.. cant i address other things too?

and is it okay to pick a text that doesnt 'revolve' around belonging but incorporates it?

The play incorporates a few different ideas.
This is how I broke it down for my students:

Impact of belonging:

- gives power, status, reputation (the girls)
- fulfills fundamental needs (all characters)
- defines identity (eg. Mary Warren)
- decides life and death - survival (whole community, the accused)

This can also be interpreted as the importance of belonging, or the need to belong.

Human paradox:
- need to assert individuality, but to belong at the same time (John Proctor)

You should prepare material on all of these ideas - not just one. You never know what kind of question you'll get.

Just be careful not to select really simple texts that only communicate a character that belongs/doesn't belong and leaves it at that.
