I don't have any issues with the amount of units you have to take for HSC-I think a more liberal education in HSC is good, because you tend to specialize in uni. Even nowadays, people wait till masters to specialize. And even so, you can still have a pretty "concentrated +narrow" study in your HSC-choose 3 sciences etc.

However OP has a point that other education systems seem easier. His point that A levels have less subjects is true. In America, the main determinants are the ACT and SAT-which are basically general tests. Sometimes people take subject test in their favourite areas.

That said, there are also education systems that seem harder, for example the IB and the french baccaulerate. Also, I've been to a highschool in Japan and their schooling was pretty rigourous-seniors were taking subjects like robotics!

Yeah, i also heard that the French schools go from as early as 7.30am til as late as 5.30pm. I do appreciate that perhaps the HSC formality isn't that overiding having you guys mention about the Japanese and other education systems, but just thought how it isn't fair that uk university's lower our grades in comparison to theirs, when the HSC system requires more work, and seems considerably harder as a result of this.

I disagree, I think 10 units is perfectly fine. As Slyhunter said there are people who do more than 10 units, I myself do 13, and aren't having extensive difficulties with the work load or anything. And I have a fairly sociable life, and 2 jobs, so n_n. I also like the broadness that is available for our education, by doing 10 units it allows for several areas to be studied, some of which that wouldn't have even been considered at university level.

Really, I think 10 units probably to be just about perfect. If they were to decrease the subject requirements, then schools would have to allocate more lessons into their timetables for the subjects, which would then result in the Board of Studies increasing the content and information requirements to be covered in each subject. So, less subjects wouldn't really matter, as subject content areas would become larger and thus compensate for the lacking of unit areas. Or, at least that is what I foresee would happen.

Try going to school in Asia, or speak to a fob. Anybody from there will tell you how glad they are to be schooling in Australia. At the age of 5 it takes kids until 8pm to finish their homework. Can you even imagine high school? You'll be kicked out for not performing good enough. To that, there are limited job opportunities so regardless of how smart you are, as there are a ton of other Asians going for the same job - there's just too many people.

My school's full of them (tbh they're what keeps us top 100).

I wasn't complaining, just asking for people's opinions, and have seen that 10 units seems to be a good amount. I do believe this is what the site is for...
I was just using another country as an example. That's how you improve things, by learning from others, hence what most do on here.

hmm lol I reckon schooling in Asia seems fairer because everyone has to work just as hard as each other, whereas over here, some people can barely work and still get a good ATAR, while others have to work more and still do shit.

also given that nearly all subjects are compulsory, there is a level playing field.. I guess I would prefer something like that (but a lot less intense though) so that the one who will get good marks is by being the all rounder as opposed to capitalizing on one subject area..

Yes, American schooling is an epic fail. It's so easy. I reckon I could kill their HS test-yay all I need to know some vocabulary and math. I know someone who went to a US uni, ATAR 96.5 and got 97-99 in all their subs easily. Straight HDs. Granted not ivy league, but a school very respected nevertheless.

It's pretty cool in Australia how you have so much freedom in picking subjects. Though I prob agree with whichever said it'd prob be fairer if everyone did the same ones, but that's where our scaling system generally corrects this. And also gives people reward for doing harder subjects like extensions.

The IB, you have to pick subjects out of categories to get a mixture. In FB, there's three streams to pick from literature, science and the economics esque stream. Even in the stream you do a little bit of subjects outside your stream, they just have a littler weighting.

But I think we're pretty lucky in Aus with our unis, most are pretty good and get on those top uni charts (USYD, U of Melb, UNSW, USYD, UQ, Monash). I know there's no Cambridge (man that school is godly, I've visited it) or Oxford or a Havard but prestige aside, you can still get practical and quality degree here.
