Tips for 2008 HSc students from 2007 student

I know this may not be helpful to some, but I wish to share a few tips in the upcoming few days before the HSC exams.

-Organize your study based on your timetable, and allow AT LEAST 2-3 days of study for each subject.

-Know how to study for subjects...for example writing out notes for maths will not be effective as doing numerous amounts of past papers.

-Remove all distractions from the study area...everything, phone, pictures, porn etc.

-Know your syllabus well! Everyone that is examined is contained within the syllabus. Also it is important to know the meanings of keywords such as Discuss, Evaluate, Compare etc. You can have the best answer but if you don't answer the question based on these keywords, you will lose marks.

-Recommended 4+ hours of study a day. I myself did 6-7 hours in the final days of Stuvac, in the first few days I just caught up on sleep.

-Some people may disagree with this, but...Know which subject you are ABSOLUTELY doomed for and will not be counted in your 10 units (thats if you do more than 10 units). Based on this you can actually allocate more study time to the subjects that will matter. e.g. my lowest ranking subject was agriculture with a rank of 50/60 while second lowest was in the 20's, so I allocated most of my study time to other subjects instead of agriculture.

-Stay healthy! Lots of water!

-Plenty of sleep prior to exams, if you pulled an all nighter, I suggest some energy drink or coffee/tea in the morning of the exam.

-Finally relax, there's a life after HSC and no one gives a sh*t what UAI you got in uni.

How many hours of study did you do per day during the 2 week holidays before HSC?
Was your study method mainly past papers and revising syllabus content?

I studied around 4 hours during the first week, and 6-7 hours the second week.
Most of it was just finalizing notes and hitting past exams.

Get the Success One books (or similar) and do past papers.
Know the syllabus inside out.
Do as many trial papers from the BOS reources section as well.
Look in the BOS resources section as some subjects have great notes, certainly better than mine etc.

Well that's useful. For me, maths will be my lowest subject, as it's my lowest ranking by far (I'm top 5 for all other 5 subjects) - however I want to put some effort into it. Pressure from my teacher and dad. I keep on saying, "Well it's obvious that won't count, so I should put all my time into the other subjects". Basically, I just need to get the UAI, of around 92 or so. I have a cadetship with PriceWaterhouseCoopers(Big accounting firm), so basically I don't see it mattering TOO much if I bomb out on one subject.

UTS, the Uni I want, give 5 extra UAI points for band 5 or 6's in English Advanced. I think I can easily get a band 5 or 6, and easily get 85+ in my other 4 subjects. I just don't know if I should waste my time on Maths, even though I'm not too bad at it, but just that it won't count - or, spend my time on the subjects that will actually count...

Any ideas?

dont waste time on subjects that won't count, unless ur not 100% sure if it will or if u need it for uni or somercrap

hhmmm this guide is good all the tips are good however i just aint motivated and i dont know why? oh well probably in about 4 days give or take i will be so deep within books and study that when its time for my first exam i will be zoned in for it

hi i was just wondering, if student 'A' was failing all his subjects in school and is in the bottom half of the assessment ranking, but he achieved 90% in all his subjects in the HSC, what would his final mark approximately be?

and if student 'b' achieved an average of 90% for his school assessment but failed all his subjects in the HSC what would his final mark approximately be?

both student study; mathematics (2unit),physics,chemistry,english(advanced) and ancient history

my career advisor was telling me that their has been cases where students perform poorly (failing) during their hsc year but achieved a very good mark HSC and received a final mark that very closely reflected their hsc mark instead of the school mark, is this true and has anybody experienced or seen this?

My last minute study plan usually consists of "stay up all night memorising practice essays".

Usually works quite well, but I wouldn't recommend it. Never, ever, ever go into an exam wihtout sleeping, like I did in about 3 of my trials.

I think the way that people end up doing better is because the cohort brings them up. Usually school assesments aren't scaled, but in the HSC, the top people usually pull up everyone elses mark. So a good person suddenly doing shit would probably mess with that pretty good.

But I don't understand it much.

In the last few weeks, I've been doing a lot of past papers. Or trying to do so, any way.
But this has not been very useful in the recent exams (Maths 3/4u) as the exams have been so different to what they have in years gone by...
