ok well Fear Factory were only death metal on their first 2 cds, Concrete and Soul Of a New Machine... on the other albums they are Industrial Metal.

Metallica were initially speed, speed/thrash is the same genre, but for that its a tossup of Slayer and Megadeth, with Kreator close behind. I would put Destroyer 666 as well since they are blackened thrash.

Nu-Metal: oh god as if this deserves to be mentioned.

Prog : Opeth

Death: Nile, Cannibal Corpse, or Soulside Journey era Darkthrone

Power - Children of Bodom

"Groove": don't really listen to any of it

Heavy Metal : don't know

Doom : Iron Monkey or Electric Wizard

Melodic Death : another genre i dislike

Black Metal - Darkthrone, Buzum or Emperor

Sorry, not trying to stir up shit here but it just occured to me how weird that is. You've heard of Dimebag, *can't believe* that someone hasn't heard of Dimebag (regardless of whether that was sarcastic or not) and ... you... don't recognize the lyrics to "Walk"?

That's kinda like, saying Oasis are the greatest band ever and looking really confused when someone sings says "You're my wonderwaaaaaaall"

Sorry just had to get that out.
Meanwhile, I just got about 20 compilation CD's filled with "metal" music, apparently. Was wondering if any of these bands are worth listening to because it's too much to get through...

Angra
Apocalyptica
Avantasia
Dark Moor
Edguy
Evergrey
Gamma Ray
Hammerfall
Helloween
Immortal
Kamelot
Nevermore
Paradise Lost
Rhapsody
Skyclad
Therion

Any comments on any of those bands would be appreciated.

Thrash: Can't decide between Megadeth and Slayer.
Nu-Metal: RATM (If they count as nu metal)
Progressive: Porcupine Tree
Power: Children of Bodom
Heavy/Traditional: Iron Maiden or Judas Priest
Death: Sepultura
Black Metal: Haven't heard much of it, but Marduk's pretty awesome

I don't know what you're into but most of those bands are really good. Only my opinion though.

I second the comment on Apocalyptica :)

I personally hate all those bands, except Immortal.

But keep in mind, I generally don't like thrash/speed/power metal.
