Exactly. Is it just a triggered emotional state, or is it underlying in his character.

I think there's evidence in the text to suggest it's a triggered emotional state that he then exploits throughout the play.

That'd be my arugment. Certainly, I think he broods on his emotions. However, I believe that his state of unhappiness and worry are triggered, and not engrained in his psyche.
