Is being a prefect the same sort of thing as being a captain? I'm assuming it is.

I'm captain at my school and I really enjoy it. It sounds like you want to become more involed within the school, so don't worry too much about prefect duty taking up too much of your time. I guess every school is different, but surely they will understand that it is year 12 so it won't be too demanding.

I have a once a week lunch meeting (which is fine) and sometimes have to help with school events that take place after school. This Friday they are sending my fellow captain and I down to Sydney for some Parliament House extravaganza which will be the first time we have missed out on school, but we have known about it for ages so have been able to plan in advance.

It's a good way to get involved with charity work, which I wouldn't be doing if it weren't for this.

Also, don't underestimate the importance of a well shined badge. I still get delight from it.
lol, i love the badges, i actually have 4 SRC badges from high school. in year 7 i got into src in term 3 , our school normally has no year SRCs but i guess they made an exception for me. so i got 4 well shined SRC badges to keep, and i got three DUX trophies wooo.

oh wait. omg how could i forget. did i mention that you get book vouchers when you come first at school .

so now i have another point. Doctor Jollly, would you rather have book vouchers, or shiny badges, i know you want both, but you could be affecting your studies if you do take the shiny badge and accept it with its responsibilities.

example, i feel like my DUX crown is being slowly taken away from me the longer im in that mentoring program more like mental program. arhhhh

We get book prizes whenever we come first in any subject. We have competitions at the end of presentation night to see who got the highest pile :D

Anyway, back on topic: Doctor Jolly, could you live with yourself if you passed up the chance to wield all that POWER??

hey doctor jelly,

um, i have been src since year 8 and 9 and 10
and leme tell you what happens, when you are a SRC?

you have a duty of responsibilty and guess what, at our school we have the prefects do one assembly and the other week the SRCs so eeek, arhh

it takes up alot of your time, a combination of class time and after school time, even before school.

oh yea this thursday i have an athletics carnival and the SRCs are running the canteen all day. its hard work, when you have to, you know do fundraisers and attend src meetings. lucky mines in rolll call.phew hehe

but i what i do hate is the extra-curricualr activities, which you get offered as soon as you are SRC/ a prefect

this year im doing two of them and they are both mentoring. omg, we have to spend 2 hours with them and since i do two programs one at regentsssss park primary and our own year 7s it eats up 4 periods of class.

overall, though i think if ur src or prefect its good go for it. but remember your studies is what matters so i always pay attention to that and lcuky, my src coordinator understands that i care about my studies so she asks me if i can do it?
it -referring to a particular fundraiser or excursion or running an assembly.

I hope i raised some good points.
wow thanks, I'll take that into consideration. Oh yes.. it's doctor Jolly lol. The name of my favourite football player :p

power? What power? At my school, prefects don't get any power. Basically, you just organise events and fundraisers. You don't get any "power" you all seem so keen on ;D

But they get a shinny badge which i wouldn't mind getting... :D

Oh, my school's prefects must be weird then. You know, giving detentions, being able to yell at annoying kids, head teachers/principals/etc listening to you...it is power I tell you! power!!

Also we have Event Committees to organise most of the events and fundraisers, so prefects don't actually do much...

Oh well, maybe I should stop commenting because my school's version of prefects seems vastly different to everyone else's :uhhuh:

the roles of prefects all depend on the school....

at our school, monitors usually have one meeting a week at lunch to organise things, they take roles at 1st rugby and football games, they effectively run houses (houses are vital at our school), they lead war cries at events e.g. rowing/rugby.....but they don't actually miss any periods of class....so it really depends on the particular requirements of the school, and whether you can actually cope with it....

edit: and they can hand out monitors detentions for friday afternoons :)
Sikhman do you board at your school

Wow.. that IS alot of power!! But I'd never do it for the power, everyone would end up hating you after you leave year 12 :p

*drolls at the thought of that power. then starts drolling at the thought of food*

At my school the prefects don't miss out on class much. They don't have the power to give detentions or anything, but teachers and students (to a certain degree) respect them more and tend to believe their lies (...) more often. They have to serve shifts in the canteen, help organise events, help represent the school at official functions and sporting events, and basically help the school out. But in exchange they get fancy badges, golden braiding (as opposed to the plainer blue braiding of any1 else), pockets and their own room with microwave etc. (and porn all over the walls, but no1 except the prefects go in there so no1 really knows...)

So, as far as I know, we have 36 prefects, who hold titles such as School Captain x1, Vice Captain x1, Senior Prefect x1, House captains x6, House vice-captains x6, House Clerks x6, and various other jobs around the school like Rowing Prefect, Captain of the Boats, and various other sporting prefects...

But in the end, there's probably around 100 guys vying for the 36 places... so I probably won't get in. But gotta try anyway!

Wow, that's really cool. We just have a whole load of "Prefects"...no cool titles :( What does Captain of the Boats do? It sounds awfully ceremonial, but cool :D

good luck in your prefect quest, anyway

LOL - good job explaining everything that I couldn't be bothered to. :p
No such thing as Rowing Prefect, I don't think, but hell, I wouldn't know, I don't do Rowing. Captain of Boats is the student leader of Rowing.

You still haven't answered my question (Devouree), about who you are, yet, though. :p

Prefects at my school are pretty much the same. BUt they very rarely use their special prefect powers and so they get along with most people OK
(All the little kids suck up to them which is very funny)

Also at my school all students are Automatically nominated as a prefect and the people who dont want to be prefect have to take their name off the role themselves before it goes to vote

i would like it a bit more if our election wasnt rigged, ffs the two most unliked guys in our year miraculously got to be captain and vice captain =| there is good parts and bad parts but yeah.
At my junior campus, teachers votes/opinions on who they wanted to be Captain/Vice captain carried a lot of weight/high number of votes then students. Simply to stop the popular students who for the most part wouldn't of done a good job and in previous years didn't. I think it's fair enough you are representing the school, can't have the school name ruined just to keep a popularity contest fair game.

It seems that people with busy lives and schedules are usually the ones who will succeed and do well in life. They are able to juggle work, school, study etc all around each other and still be able to maintain top marks.

If you are a good student, taking on a prefect's position shouldn't stop that.

Hi,

I've been considering to apply for a prefect for Year 12, but I'm not too sure if I should. I've heard that you miss out heaps on classes and I really don't want to fall behind on school work or miss out on English lessons. But I also want to be a prefect because, well, I haven't really done any leadership things over the past 6 years at high school and well ... it's never too late to start :D

So what are the pros and cons of being a prefect?

Thanks.
Mate, talk to the prefects at your school in the year above. Thats the only way of really knowing what duties and responsibilities you'll have to take on. If you've heard you miss out on heaps of classes, thats probably true.

At my school, prefects have one meeting every tuesday morning for break fast before school. One or two mornings every cycle you have gate duties to inspect uniform, and about once or twice every cycle you have a lunch or recess duty where you accompany a staff member and just have a general presence.

Your responsible for representing and respecting the school, upholding its values, beleifs and standards. You gain the respect of the staff, and the respect of most students. Yes, we get to issue dtentions, but have learnt to use this only as a last option.

Most prefects have not handed out more then 10 in the last year.

Once or twice a term, we organise a blitzkrieg on uniform. Its done without notice, with prefects placed on train stations around our area and in local shopping centres. Its then when most dt's are handed out.

But seriously, each one of us can sit here preaching to you on what prefects at our schools do, but you'll have no idea unless you ask your own!.

I valued your opinions as well and it was quite interesting to see how different everyone's prefect powers and positions were.
