Tsk, not many male cashiers these days.
At my store we have eight males working on service...two of them are supervisors, four (including me) are operators and the other two are shared between service and perishables/grocery

So, not many males compared to females. I guess girls prefer service because its less lifting and more customer orientated, and guys generally prefer to work in other departments away from customers.

ne interesting thing that my SSM was telling me about is that there is a new rule that you can not be on checkouts for more than 8 hours.. never heard anything about that before?
Indeed, correct, this is apart of the EBA currently (i believe) and the new one (i believe)

hmm, must not be in the current WA one, cause only now is she telling us to make sure we share time on self serve etc. to ensure not on checkouts for more than 8 hours

off the top of my head we have 9 males on service.

2 x supervisor
1 x operator that could run front end when covering breaks
5 x school students
1 x operator that gets around 22hr a week

-it 'comes into effect' from next week
-payrise likely to be next week
-back pay to be paid out early-mid June

I don't think it is part of our current EBA at least. I used to get 10hr operator shifts and spend them all on checkouts (and i died a little inside every time). What's this about back pay??? And a pay rise??? I have paid no attention to it because I'm leaving, but I'd love some more money.

hmm, we have 5 males who get regular shifts, 1 male supervisor, 1 guy from dairy who has a few shifts up front and 1 guy who does 1/2 shifts a week plus call-ins as a second job.

When I was hired there were three other guys who got hired with me who all quit

Careful, if you quit before you get back pay, you miss out on back pay.
They will pay is out somwhere between now and the end of june,.

Pay rise as of tomorrow. won't effect the current weeks pay tho.

Ah bitch! (Not you, Woolworths). I leave on the 22nd May. How much will the pay outs be?

Also, advice plz:
1. I currentz have 13 something Annual leave accrued, and I won't take any days off for the next three weeks until I leave.
2. My roster goes W-T-F and then either Sat or Sun depending on the week.
3. My last day at work will be a Wednesday (the 19th May), so I will miss out on working the T-F and possibly Sat/Sun

Should I instead date my resignation at the end of that week (23rd May) and get paid annual leave For my remaining two days? Does this mean I would ahve to pay less tax because my AL won't be paid out in a lump sum?

Is there a way to stay on the books until the end of June so I'm certain to get paid back pay? Or is that a bit too far on the creative accounting side?

Take a leave of absence until June and then come back and resign?

No, only in states where the current EBA has already expired. In NSW, it comes into effect on July 1 (old one expires June 30).

The 'payrise' is utter bullshit. Night staff get screwed like always. New rules about starting times, being actioned on a regional basis, result that most night staff will be starting at certain times, to ensure that they work their hours over periods where LESS loadings will be applied.
(e.g. our bakers are being pushed from a 10 pm start to a 3 am start, meaning that they miss out on all loadings applicable between 10 pm and 3 am)

New rules to disadvantage staff are being put into place. Previously there was a 10 hour minimum between shifts: under the new EBA, it is a TWO HOUR minimum gap before you can be called back in to work.

Also tea breaks were previously 10 minutes + agreed walking time... on a store by store basis, walking time is to be determined. If determined inapplicable - BY THE STORE - then the walking time (usually 5 minutes total) does not have to be given to staff.

Apparently not, it doesn't specify, though the context it was described in at the EBA meeting for department managers (at Area office) was that of a split shift one, but with no notice.

E.g.
Staffmember X does 7 am - 11 am, signs off and goes home. The store can then call staffmember X and ask them to work from 1 pm - 9 pm with a 1 hour lunchbreak, which makes the hours worked for the day at 10.5 hours (tea break in each shift and a half hour lunchbreak), though they're terrible shifts.

They're separate shifts, but there's no penalty rate for completing more than one shift in the day, no penalty rate/overtime for the gap between the shifts, and no penalty rate/overtime incurred inspite of having more or less worked 7 am - 9 pm as the gaps under the new EBA will mean it's viable.

Any how, there are 2 positions available for causal and i dont know which one to take.

1) This one offers 10 hours. This store i go to the most and mainly am familiar with where things are and stuff. I could walk there if no one can drive me but it'll take probs 15 mins, if im lucky then 10. However, the people ive seen work there look so bitchy and i dont wanna work with those people.

2) This other store offers 5-10 hours for cashier. I dont go here often but maybe once or twice a month. I have to be driven to this location. And the people look like ok people to work with.

Which one should i choose, should i try both???

Also, when it says "offering only approximately 10 hours per week" does that mean i have to work close to 10 hours or can i get away with only like 6 or 7??

I would choose the first job because it's more flexible for you, every workplace is going to have people you don't like to work with, its just a fact of life. In regards to hours, you should be able to get away with that given that you are a school student but expect a lot more hours during the holidays. I was hired to do like 20hrs a week and I've never been rostered for that many - not even during holidays.
