What is a thesis statment?

velox said:
A thesis statement is a statement of your position on the issue you have chosen. It may be a sentence or two, and should announce what you want to argue. It should have three characteristics. *It should attempt to convince readers of something, change their minds about something, or urge them to do something. *It should address a problem for which no easy solution exists or ask a question to which no absolute answer exists. *It should present a position that readers could disagree with realistically. It should be so clear that it leaves no doubt in your mind or the reader's mind about what stand you are going to take about the issue, or what the issue is.

Theres a few you can derive from this one:

when looking at inner journeys look oat what shape does the inner journey takes. is it flat out or is it a spiral one that changes with growth? look at the external influences, the state of the inner self, and controlable and uncontrollable aspects of journey. basicallly look at what are the motives and impacts contributing to an inner journey.
remember if your area is inner journeys it isnt always a good idea look at the other types of journeys. if you want to mentuion how a physical journey can impact an inner journey casually mention it and back it up with an example from your text.

Just some thoughts interpret however u want good luck studying.

T an inner journey can be triggered by any other journey, a random event, a catalyst - but don't get too caught up in physical or imaginary journeys if you're doing inner - good advice my teachers gave last year :)
+Inner journeys act as a catalyst for personal changes
+Inner journeys are a motivation for change

NEW thesis possibilities

i got a list of these from my teacher:

people undertake journeys for a variety of reasons:

to challenge our thinking
to experience a new imagined or real world
to broaden one's understanding of the world around them
fr self-discovery
to physically get to somewhere new
to overcome obstacles
to push oneself to the limit, physically
for intellectual curiosity
spirtual fulfillment
to be alone
to commune with nature
for business
for adventure.

Inner journeys:
can be the catalyst for new expereince and interactions
can be timesless, universal, individual
rarely can one turn back- change is inevitable
encourage growth and self-awareness
are not alwasy the definitive end
can involve pain and loss
can be challenging
will often contain obstacles to be met and overcome
physical journeys often catalyst for inner journeys
can be positive or negative
often solitary in nature
catalyst can be accidental or deliberate
review of an individual growth in light of experience which challenge and inspire them

And that's all on thesis for today children. it is good to find a couple that relate to your chsen and set texts and use them in an introduction of an essay or through the essay when referring to and synethisising texts.

Good luck in midcourse exams!

here's something that i found in my old english essays...

"When broaching the subject of journeys, there will be several points that are irrefutable and unchangeable regardless of time, place, social, political or economic setting. Journeys will always reflect the human self. That is, fluid, not static, ever changing and all flux and motion as stated by Plato. This change is inexorable. Journeys will involve suffering which often leads to a painful shattering of long held beliefs. And lastly, the context of the “traveller” will affect the nature of the journey taken and its outcome."

I've got my trials starting tomorrow too.. yet for some reason, I can't even get myself stressed. :|

And as you know, no stress means no study. :p

okay then getting back to business..
im having a little trouble trying to communicate my thesis for my speech
The materail i have to talk about is
1) Heart Of Darkness
2) Dead Poets Society
3) Journey Into the Interior (poem by M. Atwood)

and i know what i want my thesis to say but im having trouble trying to define it
i want to talk about how inner journeys create conflict and torment as well as resolutions and self redefinement.

any ideas??
