Hi!

I'm currently doing B/Laws & /Arts at UWS Parra, and to be honest, i have no interest in Law and i really don't like it - i chose law purely because i got the marks for it (87.25 ATAR), and because i wanted to do a course that wouldnt be hard to find a job with post-uni.

I've decided that i cant stand law and want to change, now i don't know how to do this? If i just flat drop out of uni, will i be able to Apply this September and start again next year? To be honest i'd rather try and start in the mid year intake (if possible?). I'm looking at doing journalism, communications, advertising, industrial design... i dunno, just something creative and less dry - i'm a creative artistic person & law isn't for me...

What options do i have?

I don't have much knowledge about this area, but couldn't you just 'drop' your law subjects for this semester (since its before the census date), pick up other arts subjects and then officially withdraw from the B Laws, and just do B Arts?

Unless there are other things going on, I'm not sure why you should have to withdraw from uni altogether if you just don't want to do the law component. Of course if you want to do another degree that isn't B Arts, then you would have to do formal transfer stuff I would guess (or re-apply).

The best thing would be to talk to the arts and law faculties at UWS. I would expect they would get people doing this quite frequently. I know quite a few students who started B Arts/Laws or B Commerce/Laws and dropped the B Laws component (some at end of first year, some in later years) - it just essentially converts to a B Arts.

However again I would strongly suggest you talk to the respective faculties before doing anything (like dropping out or dropping subjects) - I don't know how they do things at UWS. There should be student advisor people within each faculty you could talk to.

My parents are pretty pushy and think that going to uni to do just arts is a waste of time, especially at UWS.

I'll talk to the advisor people and see what they say, i'm just so stressed because of it all!

Tell them to go fuck themselves, don't waste four years of your life doing something you don't want to do because your parents just happen to think it's right path for you. It's not their choice, it's yours. They won't be completing the degree, you will.

OP's parent are sort of correct though. Seriously, an arts degree from UWS. That's like the lowest of the low. The least respected degree from the least respected university.

I couldn't care less about what degree the OP wants to change to. My point is that he should not allow his parents to dictate the course of his life, especially regarding decision such as this one which will determine how he will spend the next 4 years of it.

I agree with May-Cat - don't let your parents dictate your life. Do something you enjoy.

I think the advisor people should be able to help you - don't let it stress you out, talking it through can definitely help.

This should be a good case for students considering Law but don't have a strong interest in it.

Okay, sorry for causing drama, but i do think my parents have a point, i dont see a B/Arts at UWS being very useful career wise... If it were at USYD or UNSW then things would be different.

I'm fairly certain i'd enjoy journalism, psychology, international studies or industrial design, as they're all far closer to my personal interests than law. What are my chances of getting into one of these courses (at any uni in sydney, although preferably not UWS) for the midyear intake?

first of all there are a zillion law grads so finding a job isn't easy
2nd of all, it's up to you. if you can't find something you really like the look of, just take the rest of the year off and figure yourself out. don't waste more time fluffing around in degrees you aren't sure about. better off taking the rest of the year off and working ($$$) and have a think about what you actually want to do.

Transferring to another uni could be the go then, i don't think you can transfer to another uni mid year though... i think you need a year of solid grades behind you before you are considered. Would be good if someone could confirm.

Not much different tbh. Arts is arts.

- Not technical.

- Seen as an easy way out for lazy students.

- Many people see the distribution of grades as a game of chance. Usually the lazy students get high marks and the hard workers get low marks.

- Not a specialised degree. If you don't have something that you can do better than everyone else, how are you going to be able to sell yourself to an employer?

I'm not saying that people should not consider their parents' opinion, but to adhere to it unquestioningly is ridiculous.

I am also well aware that many people in arts will never get jobs in their preferred field. Many will. Entrance to a particular degree may increase or decrease your chances of employment, but it does not guarantee anything and it would be incredibly foolish to believe otherwise.

It was not my intention to turn this thread into a debate about the merits of certain degrees over others, the OP should do what they think is best for them.
