hi guys

i was practicing for my aos english essay and came across with a question that said:

im confused by it... how do u answer "to what extent" what does it want???

and can we use "I" in our essays if the questions said:

[FONT=&quot]To what extent have your perceptions of belonging been influenced?
do we specifically state what it has done for us??

"To what extent" is the most common question in history. All it basically asks you to do is make a clear judgement.

The texts ... show this statement to be true in that a sense of communal identity is developed and made stronger through belonging; yet the texts also demonstrate that individual identity must sometimes be compromised in order to belong to the larger collective.

It means evaluate. 'Discuss', 'to what extent', 'evaluate', 'assess'...They basically all mean the same thing, don't let em confuse you

No, no, to "discuss" means your not expected to come up with a value judgment. e.g. "Although this is true here, it is also true here., and not true here." Evaluate is ""This is only partially true" or "This is always true to some extent" - your argument must be far more cohesive.

You would discuss how much you agree with this statement. Does a sense of identity increase when we belong. If so, by how much. Is it a lot, or very little? If not, why doesn't it?

Don't use 'I' in an esay, as a general rule. It's extremely difficult to use effectively. 'Your' perceptions are evidenced in what you write as your thesis, and how you support it. In terms of 'extent', this will come across in the proof you use for your argument.

Oh, definately always use first person. Just do it at the beginning, like "I believe that x is valid/not valid/only partially valid" and never mention it again.

That way you tick any personal boxes the marker might think of, make a value judgement, but still keep a sense of formality.

Don't ever use first person, you sound childish. ALWAYS THIRD PERSON. There is no way you'll be marked done for using third person, but alota teachers don't like first person. Especially not right at the start of an essay, gives an immature impression
