i liked romeo and juliet
moulin rouge was too self conscious (which is weird, i usually love high self consciousness - i even liked 'a heartbreaking work of staggering genius' [a dave eggers book everyone should read])
but yeah.
colourful, energetic and kinda clever - yeah.
but if you're going to sum it up in a word, then it must be 'wank'

i would've said 'hack', but your word is pretty good as well

oh yeah, and the shawshank redemption is massively overrated. it's not bad, and i usually watch the whole thing everytime it pops up on tv, but the only really powerful section is brooks' narrated story of his time after he gets out of prison. the rest is pretty ordinary feelgood stuff.

Don't know HOW you can say that! It's an amazing film, one of my faves.
But hey, I guess it just comes down to opinion.

My number 1 favourite director is Joss Whedon - I love his long takes like the first one on the ship in Serenity.

I can't really think of 4 other directors at the moment however I allways enjoy Burton's films so I guess he counts...

And whoever said Shawshank Redemption is overrated...that's so not true! it's one of the best films of our time and all the credit it recieved, it certainly deserved!
I understand though that you may not like it as much but still...can't say that about shawshank!!!!!!!!!

I'm also a really big fan of Spike - love his movies.

2. The list should be composed of directors whose first major films released in the 90s or later, so nobody who was making movies in the 70s or 80s either. So, no Lynch, no Gilliam, no scorcese, no Spielberg.

I think Spielberg definately deserves a mention for Schindler's List - 1993. It's his greatest achievement and to me, it's even better than Darabont's shawshank redemption.

I really dislike how Spielberg produces for the lowest common denominator or mass. He's directed a LOT of shit in his time and there are only a couple of movies I can think of that truly are achievements so I'm not mentioning Spielberg because I adore him but because there certainly are movies for which he should be congratulated. Especially Shindler's List
