Agree totally on that!

There is a guy on here asking about forearm isolation exercises, and he weighs 63kg... Grab a bar, keep deadlifting until you get 180kg (any healthy, consistant, post-puberty, male can reach this in a year of solid work), put on 20kg minimum and then we'll talk isolation.

Hell... I'm only just starting, lightly, isolation stuff this week, and wont be serious about it for about another month - even though i am sure as hell no newbie trainer.

And Mumma - what 'matters to you' ? This isn't a tongue-in-cheek question... What are your goals? Its rare to find someone just starting out who's first training mentality is Rippetoe.

Its functional don't you think? Those kind of exercises use your body as a whole. It's kinda uses the body in the way it was supposed to be used, not sitting in a machine pushing something. It works out pretty much everything and doesn't place emphasis on one place in the body, so its balanced. I'm also trying very hard to get my form right, to fix up my posture, which means I need to improve my flexibility (especially hips and shoulders). The simplicity of it is attractive and it makes sense, so I thought I'd give it a go. I understand I won't get huge biceps like say dumbbell curls and preacher curls will allow, but thats not really the point.

Goals - strength/fitness and to look good. I've just started out on those 5x5 linear programs, so I'll see how it goes. I'm hoping the progression of adding extra weights each session, and the fact that I have a proper routine will allow me to stick to it and to set myself goals.

Oh, I think its a GOOD thing that you are training his system. I didn't mean to inply that it was bad or advanced, etc.

Most people enter the gym have have a program which consists of bench, curls, and lat-pull down. Want to put on 30kg of muscle (but not get too big :p), all the while being below -10% body fat.

While 'strength and look good' is admirable... everyone wants to be stronger and look good. I'd be surprise if someone said other wise. I'm a believer of numerical, real, quantifiable goals. :)

Ripp has a scale in his book with 'untrained' up to 'elite' levels. You aiming for anything in particular? Any particular bodyweight?

Something i noticed, and notice happens to other people... Once you set "My ultimate goal" and achieve it, you realize how completely un-ultimate it was, and how much further you can, and want, to go. I remember breaching 150kg in the deadlift the very beginning of last year - i danced around like i set a world record. Hit 220 on Friday, and now, i have my eyes on 260, and 300 as my 'ultimate' goal (which, if i ever attain, will probably increase again, God willing). But you HAVE TO SET THE GOAL. Right a number down in the front of your training diary. Look at it every training session, and ask "This is what i am training for". Without, you just running about headless :)

good luck!

Dear mr Ninja sir,

How do you go about increasing your numbers? At the moment I am going up by 2.5/5kg (depending on the lift) each fortnight, with the first week going for getting used to the new weight and then trying to rep it out higher.

You can't get higher unless you actually work your muscles hard. You have to feel the burn, you have to get the proper technique of lifting right. The point of weights is that you're causing micro tears in your muscles which need to be given time to repair. There are a number of techniques. To go hard for bigger muscles and an increase in strength. Or to do more reps at lower weight for tone and endurance. With lower weight and more reps you're going to be spending alot of time on building up.

Dude, if you are making 2.5kg each fortnight, your doing well! thats 65kg gain a year! Work with what you have got, and when it starts to fade, then you can look into specialist programs.

And Stevo... You are very, very wrong. I rarely get a pump, or feel the 'burn'.

There are 2 things you can train... The muscle, which will make you bigger, and a little stronger. or your CNS (Central Nervous System), in which you will get stronger, and only slightly (if at all) bigger. You can mix them, but i assure you, i only hit 6 reps one day. Most of my reps in the 2-3 range.

and... damn it. I have to actually leave my house right now. But i will post my last 6 week training cycle if need be.

this is true but it isn't the weights thats increasing your muscles. Its the food you put in your mouth after the weights.

Helpful things
Yeah I thought about how much it is over a year previously, which made me think it wasn't a bad track to be on. If you don't mind posting your cycle that would be awesome, thanks.

Stevo plz to be dropping the word 'tone' from your vocabulary. Less bodyfat = more visible muscles. That's all there is to it really.

i have to go to the gym coz i wont do it at home. i get too distrated with stuff
Id have to totally go against you there,
best thing about working out at home is that you dont get distracted from mates at the gym, and also, i can never concentrate when theres those hardcore trainers breathing air so loudly, that you cant hear anything else,
at home,
you can listen to your own "pump" music (mines hardcore gabber)
and you've got "water" close by, nothing better, also you can whip up a protein in less than 15 mins.

The truth is that I work out in my head... HA!

Although, I'm joining a gym soon, even though open-air exercise is better :D
