I have recently purchased a new laptop (running vista home premium) and wants to transfer around 20 gig worth of files from my desktop (running xp pro) to the laptop.

Anybody can tell me how?

I can currently connect both machines to an adsl modem/router for internet sharing.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

um...if theyre both connected to a router...

go to the desktop and right click on the folder(s) you wanna transfer
share them

on your laptop:
go to 'entire network' (from my network places)
click around to find the other computer
find the folder(s) you shared
drag them onto the laptop

Just for your future reference.

Vista's sharing is a lot more complicated than XP's...it's quite in-depth (as it's a HELL of a lot more secure than XP's defaults).

The *best* way to do this is through Computer Management. Right click on My Computer and click 'Manage'. Under System Tools is 'Shared Folders'. Click on this.

In the main 'area', there's a folder called Shares. Right click this and click on 'New Share...'

Give the folder path and then select a share name. Let everyone access it (best read-only) and then finish the wizard. You should be able to access the share from another computer on the network by going to Run and typing in: \\(comptuer IP address)\shareName

NB: You must have root or escalate to root to do this.

The right click on folder and share doesn't do much for me AND it takes way too much time IMHO.
