A1P is correct but remember, external transfers to undergraduate med is highly unlikely. Its so low that you have a better chance at getting into Harvard then transferring to med externally. Basically, the course doesn't matter but the uni does. Try to study in a uni that has an undergraduate degree medicine/dental course like UNSW, WSU, Newcastle/New England and CSU (dentistry). Any other ones I highly don't recommend. If you are willing to transfer interstate JCU and Adelaide are best unis to transfer to medicine or dentistry. Why?
Because:
- JCU: offers both dentistry and medicine and both don't require a UCAT plus transferring is common in this uni but they will not accept external transfers so try and study there fore one year then transfer. Last year 10 people from the science degree tried to transfer to dent/med program at JCU and 6 went to med and 4 went to dent so its very possible. Just remember they look at portfolio and not ucat so get experience while your year of a degree. Plus, dentistry doesn't need interview, just marks from uni and portfolio. So I highly recommend this uni.
- Adelaide Uni: offers both dentistry and medicine, 10 spots are reserved for people wanting to transfer from the Bachelor of Health and Medical Science/ Bachelor of Health and Medical Science (Advanced) course. So if your wanting to transfer to med/dentistry do these courses as it is the only course you can do to be eligible to transfer to dent/med at uni of Adelaide. PLUS, you can attempt to transfer after first year with ucat, and if you fail your first attempt that's okay, because you can ALSO attempt again after second year. This is a very good option as you are only competing with other in your bachelor of health and medical science degree wanting to transfer as well as yr 12. So alot less competition compared to other unis. But remember you will have to retake ucat every year you reapply so this is equally important.
Its up to you where you choose and which pathway you choose. If you want to stay in nsw (sydney) here are your options:
- WSU: do one year of any degree here then transfer after one year with ucat. There website is vague, so I highly recommenced you call them but apparently you can reapply to med at this uni every year in your undergraduate degree as long as you repeat ucat every time plus attain good marks, but call them for clarification.
-UNSW: don't really recommend as it is a very elite school. In 2017 the medicine program was the most applied degree in nsw according to uac. Do one year of a degree then attempt to transfer after one year. first year of any degree is your only chance, there are no second chances. However, they do have a lateral entry program for SECOND YEAR MEDICAL SCIENCE students ONLY, where the top ten students with ucat and marks combined are invited for interview then get into med after completing there third year of med science plus a science honours research year, then three final years of medicine, however this is a very very VERY competitive scheme and alot of times no one is accepted through this way as there were either no more spots available for transferring second year med science students and/or no one was successful in the marks/ucat/interview.
- Newcastle/new england AND CSU: don't know alot about transferring in these unis to med/dent (CSU) after first year but heard its possible, call them for clarification and/or talk to med./dent students and students who go to newcastle/new england or CSU that would know.
If all doesn't go so well for undergraduate that is completely okay. Postgraduate is an option
In fact there are more places and schools available as a postgraduate medicine then there are undergraduate. 11 postgraduate medical schools, 9 undergraduate in australia. SOooooo.. you decide.
Good luck with entry to medicine/dentistry and hope everything goes welll. sorry for the long message.
