I'd say Japan is more unique compared to South Korea,even though they do share many similarities. That said if you're looking to going to either,it means you have some sort of interest there,so find which interest is stronger and better served going to that country.

Going skiing there at the end of the year, let you know how it goes But the northern region is quite peaceful (i.e. Sapporo) and Osaka is a good city area to be in

my favourite place is kyoto

Also! I agree with the above comment, Kyoto is nice as well if you want to experience a lot of the old style japanese culture. ( temples, samurai etc)
Best time to go is when the cherry blossoms are blooming in my opinion.
