Just wondering if anyone has had experience in travelling for long lengths of time to get to uni?

I'm hoping to get into Monash, but that means 1 1/2 hours of travelling to get there on the train, and the same to get home again. I can't afford to live in Melbourne, so that's out of the question, for this year at least.
yep ill be going to USYD this year. which means that if i combine train time and walking time, itll take me around 1.5 hours to get there.. and another 1.5 hours to get back home :(

lol you guys are a sheltered bunch. what do you think will happen? i've been going on trains through 'bad' stations at 4am plenty of times and shit doesn't happen. if you really don't have any balls then you sit next to where the blue guard light is, jeez the things you guys say and think...
Lololol my Nan does this. In the middle of the day. On the Cronulla and North Shore lines. Seriously she perceives the world as a nasty place full of boogey men.

But to that guy asking, if you're in peak hour, no worries at all. That is if you can get a seat.

EDIT: I thought I could never beat my old travel time of just walking across the road to school. But I have. I live right on uni grounds. Don't even have to cross a road :D.

I've never had a problem travelling to or from uni. You'll generally be travelling at peak times, with loads of other people, so you'll be safe.

It used to take me like 2 hours door to door to get to uni. I just did my readings on the train. Hopefully now that I've moved it'll only take me an hour to get there on public transport.

I go to Monash, luckily I live around 30mins away from it. Sometimes I take public transport to get there and it takes a bit longer but it had no effect on me since I usually just slept on PT.

Thanks everyone.
Arts is apparently very good at Monash (so I've heard) so I'm hoping to go there.. Arts at Deakin apparently isn't as good, but again, that's just what I've heard.
And I always feel safe on trains, I've caught a couple at 2-3am and never had any trouble.

I did likewise for 6 years. You get used to it, the train is fine, when you're travelling around peak times there are soooo many people no-one could mug you even if they tried - they wouldn't be able to make a clear getaway. Its good if you get on early on the line cos then you'll always get a seat.

And there are always hundreds of other students walking to Redfern / getting the bus to central / town hall, so its would be very rare for you to be alone.

+ walking time = exercise (always good). You just need to be a bit more organised when you live far away, and bring notes / a good book to read on the train - laptops are hard if you dont have a seat!

In my experience, those who lived far away were on time a lot more than those who lived close by - because they had to be on time to get a park / get the train on time. If I turned up to my train station 15 mins late then I may as well have stayed home cos all the parking was full. Plus if I missed my train i was 1/2 hour late.
