Hmm.. can anybody enlighten me on how one can get into Television. More specifically on air promotions for TV networks.

i've been told that your best chances to get into that is to have some sort of connections with people who are already in the industry. I suppose the best way is to do some work experiences in the related field.

Work your way up from the very bottom, and try to get noticed by someone 'important' along the way.

yeah i had a feeling that it was to be a crawl to the top route. Fact is there are a lot of stupid people in the upper ranks running the tv networks. It drives me crazy at times...

Ha! well yeah science is good and all ( tried to transfer to B Sci (media) but no avail .thejosiekiller said:
I really like the behind the scenes aspect of television. I love everything about it. From presentation to promos to programming and the overall quest for ratings. Fact is there isnt a big need for formal training to get into television. As said before its all in who you know. From there you get on job experience, create some work of your own and try to climb up the corporate ladder. It's one of those industries that are very closed where jobs are sourced from those within the industry.
Still if need be i may do a 1 yr TV production diploma at AFTRS but entry is based on proof of creativity and such.

Most of the people in on air promotions for TV networks are already established stars eg. Rove
Peter Heliar etc. I think your best bet is to get an agent and work your way from there.

lol i dont to go on them, thats not what promo producers do. They do however direct those celebs like rove to promote their shows. Make those ads promoting a show. ie 'Sunday on an all new CSI...' that sort of stuff.bamiyan said:

One of my besties works for foxtel, she got the job by emailing Jimmy Z aaaaages ago asking for work experience, then like months later something happenned and he rang her and was like 'do you want a job?'

Some degrees train you in how to use all the equipment and everything for film/TV/video editing.... like at UTS BA Comm (Media Arts and Production)...... it would be helpful to know how to use the equipment and edit film etc because if you are trying to hunt down a job like this you will be competing against people who have degrees like this and have racked up a significant amount of work experience already..... e.g. one of the films at the tropfest finals this year and last year was by UTS students.... plus the faculty gets offers to place students in work experience and on internships for jobs like the one you are after.

Hence why ill stick to my sci degree for back up. Prob best thing to do is write cover letters to all the networks and production houses and hope for the best.
Still some people in the industry have no clue at all.

It's true it is not necessary to have a degree to get a job in Film/TV, but it is a plus because without a degree sometimes you can only go so far.
Eg. Producers generally have degrees because a Producer has to know how every technical thing works, how the industry works, etc, even down to things like why people watch TV, the whole philosophy behind it etc.
But if you just want to be a lighting director, camera operator etc you don't really need degree.

Do they have degrees? You only nee dto work in the industry to find out how it works. There rent any text books and such. I think its an ongoing learning process. If you create a concept for a TV show you automatically become 'Executive Producer'.waterfowl said:

True, but generally Producers are well educated, after all it is a very demanding job.
The only problem with creating a story for a TV show/film and automatically becoming executive, is creating a story that the companies will buy and you have to get into the companies first.

Yes to a certain extent but creativity is inate but such shows as CSI will have specialist producers to check the validity of show content but i personally doubt Jerry Bruckheimer has a thorough knowledge of forensic science.
