My HSC results:

<table class="r"><thead><tr><th>Units</th><th class="c">Courses Entered</th><th>Examination Mark</th><th>Assessment Mark</th><th>HSC Mark</th><th class="p">Performance Band</th><th> </th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><th colspan="7">Board Developed Courses</th></tr><tr><td>2</td><td class="c">Chemistry</td><td>69/100</td><td>71/100</td><td>70</td><td class="p"> 4</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td class="c">English as a Second Language</td><td>74/100</td><td>74/100</td><td>74</td><td class="p"> 4</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td class="c">Mathematics</td><td>80/100</td><td>78/100</td><td>79</td><td class="p"> 4</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td class="c">Mathematics Extension 1</td><td>31/50</td><td>33/50</td><td>32</td><td class="p">E2</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td class="c">Physics</td><td>70/100</td><td>74/100</td><td>72</td><td class="p"> 4</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td class="c">Chinese Background Speakers</td><td>74/100</td><td>78/100</td><td>76</td><td class="p"> 4</td><td></td></tr></tbody></table>

I thought I could get 70 something but this morning my UAI says no:

NSW UAI: 68.60

The UAI is below my HSC average result, it that normal?
btw, I got 2nd on my Chemistry assessments but HSC only shows it's 71.

You UAI makes sense to me.

It has you ranked at the upper end of the middle of the cohort and your marks indicate that you are about the middle of each course.

The mean for most courses would be in the mid-70s so a UAI in the high 60s is accurate. These were very similar marks and UAI to many students I have taught over the years. Mid-70s marks = mid-high 60s UAI.

You need to remember that over 95% of each course got marks in the range of 50 - 100. The UAI is a rank from 0 - 100 hence most students UAI will be lower than than average mark. Yours is fairly close but there would be many students with all their marks in the 50s whose UAI will be in the 30s or even lower.

As for the Chemistry - your rank hasn't been affected. The second rank would get a scaled assessment mark that fits in with the range of marks earned by your class in the exam and the relative difference between you and the student who came first. Your school's marks aren't the ones that you get - they get moderated/scaled based on the exam marks of your class in the subject (except when a very small number when they get their exam mark as their assessment mark regardless).

The UAI is a rank, not an average of your HSC marks. Your UAI seems perfectly normal. Looks as though you trying to play the scaling game and you lost. Btw, the fact you were ranked 2nd in Chem means nothing, because the mark is modified.

he agrees with the quoted comment.

@ OP: what your uai tells you is that you are only slightly above average overall.

Alot depends on how ur HSC marks do against the other students, meaing how well ur marks stack up against the state average. getting below the average does affect ur rank therefore ur UAI. if u can manage to get at least 4/5 subjects over the average by 4 or 5 marks you should get a UAI in the 70's. its all about how many people you beat in the course you should be able to get ur percentile stats from the UAC site.

2 unit maths 81 Average : 76
S Eng 73 average :67
Bio 80 Average: 75
IT 79 Average : 72
IPT 81 average : 76
UAI: 74.15
