i think its used to show the differences in marks between students

so if you came 3rd with 80% and the guy who came 4th got like 40% the difference in marks is obvious and BOS takes account of that. i don't know what they do with that though

The BOS simply ensures that the moderating process preserves the relative differences between students - you will be just as far in front of and behind everyone else, relatively, as you were before your marks were moderated. Ratios are maintained. That sort of thing.
