K, so I enrolled in GMN104: Introductory German I. Today I went into the WebCT board, and they're all fucking speaking in German! Some of them wrote massive introductions -- noone introduced themselves in English!

Wah. :'(

Should I ditch the class before I buy the massive non-refundable $200 book package?

ahahaha poor Robbie!

perhaps a "Um hi guys, I'm really rather impressed by your grasp of German, but could we have a little bit more english around here? Some of us really are being 'introduced' to german for the first time" wouldn't go astray? It's what I'd do, anyway :)

Lol, handbook says you can't have done HSC German Continuers... I figure there's a lot of people doing 104 who have done Beginners. Considering Beginners' 2 years of study, you reckon an intro unit wouldn't be suitable.... =/

I did Continuers Japanese and I've kinda lost most of what I learnt from the last two years... Some people are treating the intro units as refresher courses.

They don't sound like they have 'little or no previous knowledge of German". Maybe voice your concerns with the German staff, though it is quite possible some of the students have slipped through the system and did so legally...

There probably are quite alot of students in the same possition as you. I don't really know what to say, there isn't much you could do.

Yeah, I'm going to speak with the convener tomorrow, to see what she says. I'm also doing GMN295, so hopefully that'll help me a bit with 103...

But seriously, how gay is not having Beginners HSC listed as an NCCW?

Are you sure it's not webct discussions from last year? My ling210 webct discussion board still has posts from last year that hasn't been deleted yet. Anyway, I was told that what you learn in one semester in the introductory language units is the equivalent of what you learn from years 7-12 at school.

that sounds pretty intimidating.

Maybe there's a couple of people just being smart-arses and using the online German Translators to make the messages? That is, they don't know German at all? :/

Well I spoke with the lecturer, and she said that she thinks it's fair that Beginners HSC students are allowed in her class. She said that I wouldn't be competing against them because a) it's not a competition, and b) she'll be harsh to them.

I went and spoke with another lecturer (much more competent), and she told me that GMN hasn't got a post-HSC Beginners stream because of funding problems. She basically told me to leave the unit to next semester, when I'm not massively overloading.

Dropped like an oily baby. :)

Mmmmmmmm there will always be people like that. In Womens studies the other day this woman (who's a 4th yr) put up her hand and started talking about how she was doing this really in-depth thesis on gender issues at the moment. And as soon as she said that I thought "God, how could I possibly go up against her academically?" It's true they can only test on course content, but she will already have had experience writing uni essays and should have (if she's doing a thesis on it) a pretty damned good grasp of gender studies. This was an introductory course so I dunno why she's doing it(I'm guessing because she knows she's going to whip our asses at it?). I had no idea there WERE restrictions like the ones described above.

On the same note, the number of Japanese ppl who I knew did Jap in the HSC got into the high band sixes. My Australian friend who only started Jap in yr 11 didn't do as well as them. Some ppl may say it's unfair, but things like that are always going to happen.

Just learn the main German swearwords and vent your annoyance that way....

Is she mature age? I often find myself thinking that about mature age students when they start talking about their experience in so and so job 10 years ago and what they learnt. Everything I know is textbook based.

Yes, it's grammatically correct.

Yeah i'm doing gmn310 and if they're doing 104 then that shouldn't be happening. But Ulrike Garde is usually in control and i think there's something like 50 students doing 104 this semester which should mean a fair few have already had some german training.. which sucks :(
I really wanted to start learning to communicate in German early in my degree, but I won't be doing so til 4th year, which is a shame.

If I was motivated, I would learn it myself (tutor or something), but I'm really not motivated for these things unless I'm being assessed. I've actually considered doing it at TAFE -- slower pace, still being assessed, etc.
