Has anybody taken/preparing for any auditions yet? I can't seem to see the USYD prerequisites (I have found the UNSW ones though) for the auditions on its website.

I realise that I might need an AMEB Grade 6 qualification to undertake an audition, but I'm only in Grade 5 now (by this time next year, I'll hopefully be in grade 6 with my grade 5 certificate), so will they still accept me?

Also, any tips + advice would be lovely, thanks :)

I haven't done it myself, but I've got friends who have gone through the process.

Generally the grade is a rough expression of the skill level you need, rather than a mandatory factor. You could get through on a grade 5, or even lower, if the skill level is there.

As for the piece, you want something though shows off not only your technical ability, but always tells them something about who you are and the type of music you play.

Thanks for a much-awaited reply!

That's a bit of a relief, cos I thought that you HAD to have a grade 6 qualification to get in.

Must improve my technical 'skills' then, so I can focus on expressing myself better

I mean, I can't guarantee that it's the case for every course, some may have the mandatory requirement. But I'd say it's more of an indication in most cases.

Just out of curiousity - why aren't you doing music? If you're good enough to be thinking about trying out for the con or whatever, I would've thought you'd be doing at least music 2, if not extension.

Yeah, AMEB grades are a pretty shit indicator of your musical ability, imo. In my experience, I don't think you need a lot of musicality or performance ability to get a decent result. I'm not sure about uni auditions (I haven't done one and don't intend to), but I wouldn't stress if you haven't done a high AMEB grade.

I have asked myself that question since Y9. My current subjects though still fall within my passions and it's a lot easier to score a career in science/the business world than it is in the world of music

I dunno why, but I find that AMEB exams are in fact a (stressful and) fun adventure :p The pianos they use for the exams are to die for

Yeah I did them happily enough, but I managed to pass grade 8 without much actual talent for violin.
