Hey all... UNSW Commerce and Arts or ANU Commerce and PPE double degrees.... location not a factor. Which one would you recommend as better in terms of career prospects/uni experience, etc. Thanks.

The Bachelor of Commerce component will be very similar at both universities. As such, you can expect a good quality education from both universities in terms of this degree. There are three key differences that will assist you in making an informed decision:

• The Bachelor of Arts versus the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics
• The social life aspect of each university
• Trimesters at UNSW versus semesters at ANU

First, the extent to which a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics will be useful (in terms of your career) may differ. This is especially true for the Bachelor of Arts, which is a multifaceted degree, given the multitude of majors it offers. This means that its usefulness may depend on the specific major. On the other hand, a BPPE essentially encompasses three fields, which can be important depending on your study interests. Both degrees can work well with a Bachelor of Commerce, allowing you to gain knowledge and skills in several areas. In terms of career outcomes, the Bachelor of Commerce will likely be the defining element (assuming that you want to start a career in business).

Second, UNSW is typically considered to offer a good social life. This, coupled with its location could make it superior in that regard. With that being said, every university offers a social life aspect and it is up to the student to engage and be involved so that they can make the most of their time, including by making friends, joining clubs/societies and participating in events.

Lastly, UNSW adopts a trimester system as opposed to the standard semester system at ANU. A trimester is shorter than a semester and involves taking fewer subjects, although this means that the subjects are taught quicker and assignments/exams are closer to each other, which can be problematic for some students as it may lead to a workload that they perceive as overwhelming. Another potential problem is that UNSW holiday periods may not align with those of other universities, which can affect you if you have friends who attend other universities. On the other hand, the trimester system allows a student to take an additional subject compared to the semester system, that is 9 subjects a year at UNSW versus 8 subjects a year at ANU. This can help them complete their degree faster at UNSW compared to a university that adopts a semester system.
