Say if you failed a unit of study does this effect your employment opportunities?
E.g.
Say if you academic transcript looks like:

HD
F
D
HD

What's the outlook? Do employers not look at employing you? What's the case?

I'm sure one fail isn't going to matter too much if your other marks are consistently good. You might be asked to explain what happened in that course.


Although to be honest, I think a lot of employers don't even look at your trascript. Anyone else confirm/deny this?

Honestly, how can you expect us to give you a definite answer? Employers might look, they might not. They might care, they might not.

It can depend on what kind of positions you are applying for. From talking to friends who competed for competitive graduate positions at large firms, they definitely do look at your transcript and will question any mark.

Then again they might not. Marks might get you through the door but you need more than marks to impress people at interviews.

I know that my sisters have both said that none of their private sectors employers have asked to see their degree or their results. And I think others have said something similar on BoS previously. Could be wrong about this.


Although - if you're applying for government jobs, they will examine your transcript.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just be prepared to explain why you got a low mark in the subject

Most private sector employers with formalised Graduate programmes will ask for your transcript (off the top of my head Deloitte, EY, Mq Bank all do, can't see why it would be different for any others). Have some truly horrendous fails on my transcript (26, 34) but still got an internship at RailCorp (which was interviewed and offered before any other real engineering internships or summer programmes were open for apps so didn't apply anywhere else), but that could be saying something about the height of the bar there. If it's straight Ds and HDs apart from one F it's not really going to be an issue anywhere, though.

As a general principle, Government agencies will examine your transcript mainly as part of your clearance - ie. you went to uni where you said you did. They'll look at the contents of the transcript if you are applying for a graduate position and yes, if you have an F, they will ask why.

It largely depends too on what the F was for. Ie. if you are applying for a job with Treasury and got an F in a Finance subject, probably not gonna be in your favour. But if you are applying for Treasury and got an F in Art History, then they aren't gonna care.

So long as there's an explanation.
