funny how i usually beat all the kids with writing disabilities, who get to use laptops. I don't feel like they have much of an advantage over me. If anything, markers will pay more attention to their work, whilst they will skim over my work for the main points. This gives me an advantage

Oh wow, you beat kids with writing disabilities
OH WOW

do you want a sticker?

... ... ... perhaps reread my post in the context of this thread, and then get back to me. why would i proudly claim that i am so much better than kids with writing disabilities. why would i also claim that people without writing disabilities, could actually gain an advantage over those with writing disabilities, who get to use laptops.

this is why women are banned from speaking in Krygazmekistan

Funny, how I beat all the kids with writing disabilities.

Umm excuse me?
How would you even know that you're beating these kids?
And this is obviously an attempt to gloat, why?
Why on earth would you gloat about something like this?

Context of this thread, riiiight. How is you making a claim that you beat kids with disabilities have anything to do with the context of him wanting special provisions.

"People who use laptops have an unfair advantage over the rest of us. People who can't write properly shouldn't be allowed to use laptops"

"People using laptops don't actually have much of an advantage, if any, over the rest of us. For example, I don't have much trouble performing better than people with laptops, thus am not at a disadvantage"

Therefore, a logical and well-reasoned person could deduce that a person who has a writing disability is still at a disadvantage. A laptop can help even the playing field. Therefore, people should be allowed to use laptops.

However, you madam, are not a logical or well-reasoned person.

Many people have writing difficulties, and if you were to discuss this with a councelor and they find you to be at a disadvantage, they may allow you to use another form of communication - this will not include a laptop; it will be person who will write for you.
Usually it will be one of the councelors.

I have a person-usually Gloria from student services-who accomanies me to every examination.
Anyone here have a problem with that? I couldn't give a flying fuck if you think you're at a disadvantage because I require assistance in regards to handwriting.
Go play with your dick and sulk, cunt.

Ahh bugger, I tried the dictation once and it was horrible, I found it very difficult to speak an essay. Looks like I'm staying at UTS : /

Posting a question on these forums is an emotional rollercoaster.

i am all for bagging out people that demand special provisions to get ahead of the rest of us, but when someone comes out of their comfort zone to ask the question on the forum about it, then flaming them back for asking is just going too far..

Yes it is definitely possible to use a computer for exams at USYD. I wouldn't have a clue of how you would apply to use one though.

Maybe you should have sex with her. That's what you usually do to annoying black women, right?

I kinda understand it though, a LOT of people did abuse the laptop system in Higschool, for example when I applied to use one in highschool I had to take handwriting lessons for two years beforehand before they admitted that my problem couldn't be fixed (I have very poor hand eye co-ordination, you can only imagine the jokes when I told my friends I am certified unco :haha:), but as soon as I "broke the floodgates" four people who really did NOT need it at all faked writing conditions to use laptops in the HSC.

Basically, what you need to do to get special provisions at USyd is to go up to Disability Services (Level 7, Education Building) and arrange an interview with them. You need to bring medical proof (HSC things don't count but a specialist's letter does) and they'll arrange a 30-45 minute interview with you.

EDIT2: What I mean by that is that you'll have to go and arrange the interview. They'll give you a booklet on the types of stuff you need to get in your doctor's letter so make sure you fulfil those requirements before going in for your interview.

Generally speaking, if you can't write, they'll give you use of a computer - you get to pick from Mac or PC, depending on which you prefer.

If you have other problems, they can also arrange for things like extra time, rest breaks and the like.

Also, they are quite happy to provide something called the Peer Notetaking Service which will provide your lecture notes. That way you're not disadvantaged from being unable to write and therefore unable to take adequate notes.

For example, I have a lot of psychiatric issues and so I'm on an absurd amount of medication. I basically can't write because my hands shake so badly I can barely hold a pen (side effect).

Disability services are really nice. I've got extended time, use of a computer, no morning exams, rest breaks and the ability to bring food and water into my exams (plus, obviously, I get my notes through Peer Notetaking) - and last semester they managed to get my attendance requirements waived cause I spent a chunk in hospital.

EDIT: Before anyone attacks my special considerations, I'd just like to say that I'd pretty much be unable to attend uni if not for these things. If you're going to bitch at me for them I'll launch into a rather long medical explanation, so, please don't.

Thanks for the detailed advice, I have my own laptop so I'm perfectly capable of doing everything at uni but hand write the exams.

what difference is there going to be, given you'll only be allowed to use a notepad style text editor?

They might as well just give you the degree, save alot of time and effort for themselves. I'm not having a dig at you specifically but at the whole system in general. Special provisions should only go so far, not to a point where they make competion blatently unfair. It's like letting 2 extra players onto a soccer team because one has a sprained ankle.
