Various reason: Quality, UAI, Distance, Reputation, Scholarship, Friends etc

These i have posed before, if you are too stupid to comprehend, i am too lazy to repeat it for you again.

Those reasons leading to the inability to go to UNSW/USyd, then UTS is an excellent choice. But UTS should not be hailed as better than NSW/Syd in terms of quality.
If you choose your university based on the university as a whole rather than the course you want to study you are an idiot. Which, from reading your posts I am growing increasingly convinced of.

There are many cases where the quality of the degrees offered at UTS are hailed as superior than the other universities by employers (there are also cases where this is the opposite). To place a blanket over the entire university and say that the 'quality' is not there is a stupid statement.

A note when choosing your university - choose the course you want to do, do not base your decision on the perceived reputation of the institution.

If i interview 1000 people on the street. Of how many would say Yale is a better university than UNSW? Pretty much everyone. Despite so, UNSW is better than Yale in courses such as technology. So its really irrelevant to choose such niches and say... no wait, its actually not a better university overall. Get real and face it. Analogy to say... journalism is better in UTS than USyd so we cant compare them two. Of course we can compare the general standard of universities.

Im also not surprised at the reactions here... this thread is in fact in the UTS section of the forum.

I do medical science.. and i would NEVER EVER say anything to discourage you from doing it unless you asked of course.
UTS is more practical and the courses are more industry orientated.

UTS:IT is very good in australia .I must say Iam very impressed with everything the uni has accomplished in only 20 years!

UNSW and USYD are old style unis, pure theory approach...

Do yourself a favour,go to UTS. lol

i want to go to UTS for VisCom because i think its the best option for me personally in design compared to Design in UNSW or something.

I think it just all depends on what suits the individual. Everyone will always like or dislike something.

Reading through the thread.. runable you're just an ignorant child. Do some reaserch on courses and not on university rankings.. a univeristy being prestige means nothing. A person with HD average at UWS (knowns to be less reputable) > pass average at usyd.. I don't see being pretigious helps you there.

I went to UNSW > USYD > UTS.

UNSW - Courses are mainly theory based however is a great university and a great place for socialising.

USYD - Pretty much same with UNSW.

UTS - Courses share both theory and practicals equilvalently, however my time being here is enjoyable though its quiet at times due to being in the city.. people would rather be in the city then in the tower itself in my opinion anyway...

Eg. in I.T UNSW and USYD core subjects are mathematics and some phyics.. not much point in I.T .. even if maths help with problem solving skill for programming.. if you're not majoring programming there is no point doing maths and physics.. where UTS offers a more appropriate I.T program there is no maths =p for those who hate maths..

So.. Mr runnable.. I think you need to do some extra research as I see your thoughts are all based upon research and not personal experience..

Though.. all 3 unis are great.. pick the course not the uni.

which uni you at?
majoring in?
I think its great. Except for a few subjects which really suck, like really really suck! It's because of the SC, however different uni's will have same or more problems. For UTS though, I've found all of the subjects good. Except for Physiological Systems, Medical Science 2 and I'm pretty sure Pharmacology is gonna suck - once again because of the lecturer, he just don't give a fuck.

I'm doing Medical Science and Business.

My Medical Science friend hates Cell Biology because he frequently rants about it in addition to the Statistics course.
Should've done Maths for Life Sciences.
Back to the old dy/dx days.

oh ok. thanks.
so is it better to do med sci over a B sci ?
Are you deadset on Med Sci though? With the B.Science - you get to choose your stream after one year of doing core subjects. E.g. After one year of doing the basics you could do all the subjects a B.MedSci student would do but the only difference would be they would graduate with B.Medical Science and you with B.Science (Medical Science). Same degree, different name.

If you tend to change your mind quick then do a B.Sci then at the end of the year you can choose to go wherever you like to go, but if your sure then go into B.MedicalScience. However if I was you I'll do a specialist degree such as one of the B.MedRad courses at USYD. Med Science is good for research and if you want to do a GAMSAT and get into MBBS etc, but honestly job wise, when you graduate with just a B.Medical Science you will only be qualified to be a technical aide/assistant. If your goal is to be a Scientist, you'll need to further your studies with Honors and eventually a Phd.

Or double your degree up with something else like me :D So in the event science fucks me up I can still rebound onto Business which has like a zillion more job prospects then science :p

I'm wondering what UTS's Communications in Writing and Cultural Studies degree is like? At the moment I'm tossing up between trying it and UoW Creative Writing degree - since writing fiction is what I really enjoy doing. (USyd and UNSW don't have any courses in that area, as far as I can see.) I'm planning to try to combine with Law, so that I can actually get a job coming out of it... But I'm wondering if anyone knows how the two writing courses compare.

Science keeps me interested and business is my safety net but for some reason (job hunting) I'm sure that its going to be tough to find a suitable job in the science field without having to go into further more advanced levels of studies, because I for one do NOT want to be a Technical Aide for the rest of my life.

Business is cool, good money if you know where to go.

Pretty much everyone? Hah

But you seem to be arguing on thin ice here... good luck being a lawyer.

Writing Courses:
well i don't know anything from personal experience
(i do media arts/law at uts) but i do have friends who do the writing/law combo at UoW and UTS. The UoW environment sounds very supportive and the good thing is that the uni has a lot of scholarships on offer, whereas UTS barely has any general scholarships in the humanities/law faculties. I did some poetry workshops with some of their teachers and they were very genuine, passionate people with constructive advice to offer. The UTS course has a really good reputation (apparently the best writing course in Aus but you'll have to take their word for that :p) but some people transfer out of it early on. Don't worry, most of these people didn't make the cut off for journalism and it was easier for them to transfer internally. The UTS humanities course does include some compulsory cultural/media studies subjects, which a lot of people don't like but if you keep your mind open, they are quite provocative, interesting and do sharpen your analytical skills. It is Writing and Cultural studies after all. Like you said, there aren't many tertiary courses aimed at creative writing and I think if writing is your passion, then both unis offer good courses. I actually had both down as part of my preferences and would have been happy getting into either if I hadn't gotten into my first choice.

Oh the thing about the combined degree that I find a bit irksome is that there aren't many electives (none for first year) and in 2nd and 3rd year, you end up doing one professional subject (e.g. you choose one writing subject for the first semester) for the whole year (a cultural studies subject in the other semester). Don't know what the Wollongong one is like.

You can't just call a university good or bad as a whole. You have to look at it faculty by faculty, and see what the reputation is for the graduates within the field.

Mum did nursing at USYD ten years ago and it just looked like tonnes of theory. My parents attempted to persuade me to go to USYD (because the UAI cut offs were higher), but the thought of doing that amount of theory seemed pointless when it would be practical skills I would really use. Meanwhile with my nursing degree I have real nurses telling me all the time, "our graduate nurses from UTS are pretty good", "UTS taught me really well" etc etc. People are actually quite shocked when I tell them how many clinical weeks I have had, how flexible my timetables are, and other things like student feedback surveys.

But at the end of the day in areas of skills shortage, nobody gives a shit about your university, they just want to see that you have a degree. Then you're hired.

Those "university rankings" are rubbish. The amount of doctorate degrees within teaching staff do not equate to the quality of teaching staff; teaching staff are good teachers simply because they're good teachers. If you really want to see how easy it is for students to get a job after graduating across courses, get a copy of the good universities guide.
