I have been offered early entry into Engineering/Business at UTS but my ATAR + bonus points may be able to get me into UNSW for Software Engineering/Commerce during the later rounds. At UTS i'd probably major in ICT and specialise in software. Im leaning towards just forgetting about UNSW and taking the UTS offer but if you guys can help me weigh up the advantages of each that'd be good! Some of the stuff in quote marks are kind of random haha but are things i've heard from my parents and teachers

For UNSW Arguments:
  • Best in the state, if not Australia, for computing, engineering and commerce.
  • Prestige
  • Social life
  • Not in a tower (lmao)

For UTS Arguments:
  • Extremely convenient to get to, "you wont be tempted to drive there, and you don't want to do that!"
  • "Its a technology university"
  • Intern stuff and industry connections
  • The previous point will help me secure a job after graduating
  • "Once you are in the industry and have experience, employers dont care about what degree you have or where you got it from."
  • Business faculty is apparently pretty good
  • The social life at UNSW is supposedly exaggerated and i have friends going to UTS most doing engineering too, just one friend who wants to do UNSW engineering and he got 10 points under the cutoff for Electrical Engineering so will probably be doing FEAS and/or might not get in (in which case he'd go to UTS im guessing).
  • I'm white so i'd probs be the odd one out at UNSW - especially in that course
  • Exams easier than UNSW. my transcript will look better
  • Not as competitive as UNSW
  • Less HECS (i think?)
  • Free bridging courses - i want to redo 2u and need to learn 3u so this will save me like $600-800 straight up

Anything i have missed, any suggestions or advice?

UTS is a technology university but the technology isn't as good as you would expect it to be (trust me).

I think HECS is the same

Exams aren't really that easy, some subjects have a 60-70% fail rate (In IT)

The business faculty is alright, uni is pretty good, just doesn't have a uni "feel" to it because it's just 10 buildings.

Looks like you've already made your decision, haha.
Essentially yes haha, but the fact that UNSW is the best for what i want to do is a huge factor. Im especially interested in any current or past students at either UTS or UNSW can confirm any of the stuff i have said. Either way i'd hate to be stuck without a job or have to start with a job i am over qualified for so the main two things im worried about is 1. Is it hard to get a job as an engineering graduate? 2. Would the internship and industry connections at UTS essentially balance out the lack of prestige?

Free if you are a UTS student.

Heard that lol, that's why i put in quotation marks - it's something people tell me haha.

Not just for the engineering part, commerce and/or business too. I don't mean that UTS's exams are easy, more that UNSW's are hard.

Oh ok, do you think the "uni feel" is that important haha?

Additionally, how late can you transfer? A couple of years in i might decide id rather go to UNSW, but right now i'm thinking UTS is the better option for me I might not even get in to UNSW, i've heard people have got in to the course i want with around 88 before but i think it's so far under the cutoff that they might have just been lucky.

lol what the fuck im in the same position as you, my first preference was engineering (software)/commerce at UNSW and second pref was engineering/business which i will major in software engineering, and i got an early offer to UTS due to some engineering questionnaire lol..and i want UNSW, but i think the cut off of 96.70 wouldnt drop dramatically this year, (infact i think it may rise). lol and my atar is 89.8 so with 5 bonus points its still not enough. still got an offer to ANU as well so not sure. I'll probs take UTS one.
Btw with your atar of 88.05 plus 5 bonus points i dont think thats enough for UNSW. go for UTS.
Put your UTS offer to no 1 by Jan 2nd. Get the offer, accept it. Jan 5th, put ur UNSW pref back to first and leave it there. If you get one in later rounds then cancel the UTS and accept the UNSW one. Thats what im planning to do. lol but i will probs see you next year haha

Mate, why not put UNSW as your first preference?

I would say that UNSW probably has better industry links than UTS.

Im changing my UTS pref to no 1 for the early JAN offer, once i get it im changing the UNSW back to no 1 for the main round offers.

Oh right, sorry about that. I wasn't too familiar on when and whether early round offers applied in this case.

Carry on...

Haha wow! Yeah im just going to go for UTS i guess, might see you around =P. In an older thread i had kaz1 said that with an atar of 88 (lol i pretty much estimated my ATAR for a long time now) i had a "good chance" of getting into engineering (software)/commerce at UNSW in the later rounds. Tbh i hope cutoff rises a bit and im far off the cutoff so i have no regrets for choosing uts lol.

I would say that UNSW probably has better industry links than UTS.
Really? Even with all the internships and the BIT scholarship that UTS have?
