i've read that some universities simply take the GPA cut off as a "hurdle" whereby obtaining a credit or above will suffice for entry into Post grad medicine and there are other universities that use the score in conjunction with the GAMSAT and interview. Where does UWA fall into this?

Most uni's acutally rank in conjunction with GPA and GAMSAT to offer interviews.
UWA uses all three to determine grad med placements.

"The top 90 applicants were then selected for interview. In 2008/09 approximately 90 applicants will be interviewed. Offers for interviews will also be dependent on the outcome of the preference system because applicants only have the opportunity to be interviewed by one medical school. Approximately the top 60 applicants based on GAMSAT, GPA and Interview scores will be offered a
place in the graduate course for 2009 entry. The 60 places will include a
number of Bonded Medical Places and Medical Rural Bonded Scholarships as
well as the rural and Indigenous sub-quotas."

You require a min GPA of 5.5 to be considered for interview and a higher GAMSAT of about 62. The higher the GPA the lower the GAMSAT score required.
