wait r u saying UNSW is not as wishy washy??
they have a new course with no grads yet... in fact they just entered clinical yrs..

its a bit to early to call it... 3 more yrs.. and we will see how their

newcastle has had about 20 cohorts of PBL grads..
melb 2-4 (im not sure its strictly PBL)..
adelaide has had 1 purely PBL and 6 mixed (PBL + didactic tuts)...
monash has had 1-3 PCL...
usyd has had 2-3 PBL

not to say they wont learn from others mistakes.. but we wont be able to appropriately judge the quality till 2010..

To that person on here who said that the cut off for this course in 07 would be 92, you're full of shit.

Give me a reference, or the allegation that you're full of shit stands.

Don't you understand that they university cannot say what the cut off will be? It's determined by how many people apply, and that alone.

If EVERY SINGLE PERSON with a UAI above 92 applied for this course, are you trying to tell me that they would all get in?

prolly as good... because there is a minimum criteria of medical courses.. set down by the AMC

there is alot of experienced staff in the course.. and id hav no qualms... aside that its new... they will prolly adopt a more newcastle/adelaide/sydney/queensland uni style i.e. PBL..(<=== google it)

pros are that there will be lots of new good resources... compared to older schools.. and since the staff hav been doing it at other unis.. they will not start blind..

tho it is more targeted to produce western sydney doctors..(specialist, interns and residents.. etc)

Lol, did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed?!

Read this:

http://www.uws.edu.au/download.php?file_id=15823&filename=MBBS_Course_Information.pdf&mimetype=application/pdf

I believe the person said minimum UAI anyway, not cutoff.

You're a silly little troll, you are!

not realli.. it does matter cos Uni of Melb have a good and thorough course... in terms of yrs and having to refine it..

its been shortened prolly by eliminating the adv med science period... and making it more practical..

has anyone heard about the different interview style that they are trying to introduce? our careers advisor was telling us that they're thinking of having like a stall thing with like 10 interviewers each in their own sortta stall thing.... no idea if that arguement has substance. just wondering if anyone heard it too.

(PS sorry if this has already been mentioned in the thread, not bothered to read all the pages)

it sounds sooo stupid if they call it an OSCE (aka OSCA) tho.. cos OSCE=Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation

barely anyone unless they are in a professional health science degree (e.g. nursing) would know what this is like..

Thanks for that info, there's some interesting stuff on interviews. Just wondering, when do you have to have the first aid certificate for?

yeah uhm was also wondering about the Special Requirements Prerequisites

Special Requirements Prerequisites
To be enrolled in this course students must comply with the current occupational screening and vaccination policy of NSW Health at course commencement. Students must obtain Student Registration by the Medical Board of NSW, and must successfully complete a Work Cover Authority approved First Aid Certificate prior to the completion of year 1 of the course.

when they say obtain Student Reg by the Med Board of NSW, do they mean we "enrol" ourselves to this or is it inbuilt when we start.

and with the First Aid Cert must we learn this before we begin the course or during the course? (and is this through TAFE or is learnt somewhere else?)

lastly what is a "Work Cover Authority"?

sorry for the really noobie questions if any med students or any1 who has information on this, i would really appreciate it. thanks

keep up the excellent thread guys!

1) it should be automatic and the duty of the university to reg u with the medical board... but u need to sign a form about getttin a criminal check etc

2)First Aid certificate sounds lik u do it during the course as part of ure component

3)Workcover is a company that does workplace safety insurance and misc. tasks to do with them.. such as occ health ..

Special Requirements: Not sure about other unis but everything was done for us at UNSW once we started the course, including vaccinations, registration with the medical board, first aid etc.

I met Neville Yeomans the other day! He visited our department for Journal Club and we had coffee after.
