A lot of ancient history people are graduating, so I'm going in as well. :)

Tomorrow I am taking an HD video camera and another friend is bringing a pro DSLR camera to shoot the graduation and take photos of our friends getting their degrees.

I know about the 'do not go past the velvet rope' policy at the front of the ceremony, but was curious if anyone knew:

a) are we allowed to stand at the back

b) can we go a level up (to get a higher angle of the stage, organ and crowd etc without being too visible/disruptive)

c) if (b) is not an option, is it cool to have a small, unobtrusive tripod in front of you for video's/photos - I have seen this happen last week

Just thought I would throw it out there so I don't have to deal with security eye-ing me off like i've stolen all this equipment or want to spray paint the chancellor or something...

Well, I ended up beating security in a way.

I asked first thing what the rules are - we weren't allowed on upper levels, but we were allowed to shoot from our seats, as long as it's contained in front of our seats.

So I went right down the back of the place (last row - mainly so I wouldn't be in the way of people behind me) and set myself up next to a concrete support column. I only used one seat, and the rest of the tripod occupied empty space around the support.
A security guard came up to me and said I wasn't allowed to stand, I must sit down, or dismantle the entire camera.
Luckily i had a remote control - so I sat down and had to stretch up whenever I wanted to film something.
The friend I was with sat down the front to take photos with her good camera - apprently there is a rope that you can walk up to take good pictures - security pretty much barked at her to stay seated, despite other people roaming

I don't know why security was being so irritable today, especially when many other people were standing up, walking about etc
I didn't mind complying with their rules, but I didn't like how rude/short tempered they were even when they were being asked a simple question - in the end I probably disrupted the people in front of me, always reaching up above their heads, than if I had been right at the back standing to get the shots I needed for my friend.

Ok end of my camera rant - ZOMG WTF was up with the trumpet/organ
How many split notes, missed notes or out of tune notes did you guys count this morning :s - ouch!!! Especially when they just stopped and started again haha.

Anyway - even though I am second year - graduations are fun (cause they give you nice food!)

Congratulations to everyone today!

Security's main reason for being there was to ensure that the official picture vendors made the most amount of money.

I'm kind of amused - i was using a similar standard of camera to the professionals so no wonder security was scared of my HD goodness :p

so what does a graduating ceremony look like? Was discussing this with some uni friends today... we all finish after this year but have no idea what the hell to do during ceremony as we've never seen one lol.

Oh, and when is that "hey, I'm going to graduate soon I think" form due?

they are extremely regal and fancy

in the holidays i'll begin uploading the proceedings etc

there is a welcome message, turn off phones
then music as the academics arrive on to the stage from the upper levels
then the chancellor speaks
then students stand and are told they are allowed degrees
then everyone gets their degrees one at a time
then there is a musical interlude
then the occasional speaker
then closure
then academics walk out to music
then we go outside and eat foooooood
