Why waste a year of everyone's lives? Studies have shown that the best way to contribute to society is to get a job and then give the money you earn to charity so that they can spend it on specialised services to assist their work

Also, why should the government give $23k just because you finished school? It already payed for a fair amount (or a lot) of your education. The money should go to better infrastructure.

I would support a government volunteer scheme however, where you could work 6 saturdays a year or something in return for a professional reference, as well as youth allowance for the duration of your further education (regardless of parents' income)

I've been thinking abolish the army and fund a small nuclear weapons program. It'd probably be cheaper in the long term, has science benefits, and would be a more effective detterant than our ineffectual armed forces.

Very practical for dealing with insurgents and small-scale conventional confrontations.

There are other solutions to dealing with insurgents. The police can easily deal with the majority of small opposition to the government. An armed populace for others. Private security firms empowered to protect property and people.

The point is, there wouldn't be any small-scale conventional confrontations. We're never going to be involved in any sort of 'small-scale' defensive confrontation, any future armed conflict with an independent nation will always be major. It should be a stronger detterant than our existing armies.

Our army is hopeless against any of the regional powers.
