if the school cant be maintained then i dont think they should be propped up by the government. if the school cant function i think it should be converted into public

a private school is cheaper for the government than a pub school. chances are that people who go to private schools inadvertently fund public schools more than you do. win win for everyone.

you don't always get the benefits. im a boarder and bc ive done y12 in a city i don't get it for quite a few unis. usyd also uses government classifications of the areas to determine who is regional/rurual

yeah cause you board in the city you shouldnt have an excuse if your atar doesnt meet your course. my point is the fact that people still get rural benefits for boarding is a bit ridiculous.

What? So the government should allow hundreds of relatively poor private schools across NSW to close? Do you even fathom the implications of that? The government aids several sectors across the economy that aren't public; what's so bad about funding schools? It's not like they're propping up Sydney Grammar or Knox lol.

well i did the first 11 years of my schooling in a regional area and there was a really big difference between me and my peers when i first started y11. i had a fair bit of catching up to do and my grades weren't the best. the reason regional and rural students still get benefits even if they board is because the earlier years of high school have an impact on how you perform in y11&12 and also being a boarder is so difficult compared to being a day kid, especially with travel

If that's the case, you are still eligible from my understanding (definately for med, that is the case).

From a sociological point of view, the urban/city debate on NSW education is more complicated than people think. Yes, you can even get state-ranked, but it's the case of whether you have acquired the cultural capital you need, to know how to succeed in your HSC, on a case-by-case circumstance. Lack of motivation probably is also part of the equation. However, I know some of my friends who actually cared but didn't even know how to take notes. They would literally try to write every word my teacher said.

don’t you think that if rural people truely were at an advantage, rich people wanting to do med would move to rural areas? go to school at rural schools? or deep down do we all understand that rural education gives you a disadvantage.

this is a bit of a bad argument. moving to rural areas (or anywhere really) is a massive hassle for just med. rural education does give you a disadvantage but the change in med cutoffs defo overcompensates. in terms of the actual disadvantage though, i'm curious. what do you think hinders you? your teachers? your environment?

tutoring costs money. the only reason i can get tutoring is because i got a scholarship that pays for it, but even with that, it can only get me 25 min sessions for two subjects once a week, and costs like a quarter of the price of dr du. the tutoring i get is not very quality. but obviously i have to make do. also picking subjects that scale well is not as easy as you make it out to be - nobody at my school even knew about how scaling worked or atars or anything like that, we only chose what we enjoyed. i only really learned about stuff like that this year.

tutoring does not make that big of a difference. also with scaling, i feel like the onus is up to the student to do their research, same with university and every other major decision in your life. maybe i'm cynical but everyone says to pick the subjects you will do best in/enjoy so like ???

Urban students are not more disadvantaged than rural students when getting into medicine lol. If it was that easy than everyone would get 99s rurally. That's why when people get 99s rurally they are considered anomalies.

the 99 atar wasn't what I meant by 'disadvantage'. I'm talking about the cutoff and entry difficulty when you compare it to the strain an urban student has to endure to simply be interviewed.
