If you happen to blitz your final exams, you'll get a great exam mark. But your assessment mark won't improve as a result of your special performance in the externals - it'll still be the EXAM mark of the person who came your rank.

Sorry, I'll try and clarify now.

You get two marks that average together to yield your HSC mark:
-> Exam mark: this is determined entirely by how you performed in the external exam. Simple.
-> School/assessment mark: this is the exam mark (see above) of the person in your cohort who came your rank in the externals.

So let's say you were ranked 24th in chemistry in your cohort. In the event that you blitz the final exam, you'll get, say, 95 for your exam mark. But for your assessment mark, you will get the EXAM MARK of the person who came 24th in the externals. So if the 24th best mark in the externals for your cohort was 85, that would be your school mark.

So your final mark in this case would've been 90.

Let me know if you need more clarification, hope that helped!

oh so like this

assesment exam.
90 90
92 91
91 94
...
( 24th you) 74 95
...
( 24th external) 85

in the end
as mark would be 85
and exam mark would be 95 ?

no it wouldn't.

We need everyone in the class' marks to know how he would go.
I was assuming that he came second to person A internally and person A came second in the externals, while he came first.

This is a common misconception of how the process works (I thought this as well). Basically, the person who comes first internally recieves the highest external mark from their cohort as their internal mark. The same is true for the person who comes last internally. Everyone else recieves a moderated mark based on their ranking and the relative gaps between candidates. So 5th internally will NOT recieve the 5th highest external mark as their internal mark. Just study, and aim for the best marks you can get.

Don't try an over analyse it, if you work hard, it will show

Yeah I'm aware that it's an approximation and that marks are moderated in between, but I've found it to be rather accurate in real life, and it also explains the general mechanism very well.

Thanks for pointing that out though, I should've mentioned that it's not 100% correct. I maintain that the gist of it's valid though.

This, dont worry too much with stuff out of your control (like scaling, moderating etc).

True, thats why I believed it worked that way to begin with.

Rubbish.

You need an intimate, complete and thorough understanding of the 'playing ground' you're competing on. This will help you plan out your study and will provide accurate and helpful feedback as to what you can expect and how you can improve it.

The 'just do your best and don't care about anything else' attitude doesn't work in the HSC.

I have to agree.

Why play a game when you don't know the rules?

how so really? if your trying really hard , getting 1st ranks, and band 6s what does that stuff helpfull?, sure you know one sub is more scaled than another, but all that matters really is the mark, so if you are trying your best , and getting high marks, how are you at a disadvangtage?

Look, obviously, everyone wants to know how the HSC works. But, given the nature of scaling and aligning, many people often obsess over it and waste heaps of energy worrying about it (I remember some HSC'ers last year bombarding the ATAR forum with different "situations" each time). I think what mitchy_boy is trying to say (and what I am trying to say) is that its ok to want to know about this stuff, but dont obsess over it as you have no control over it. Its better to focus on the things you can control.

I think he meant knowing how it works allows for this ^ to happen.

Yeh your right about obsessing. Just a good idea (and the right idea) of how it works will let you know of what needs to be done to achieve a maximum mark (for you of course).
