dude, dont worry so much. no matter which one of those you pick, you will probably start by doing the core commerce courses just like every other commerce student. i believe specialisations only come into the picture in 2nd year. so even if you miss now, its not the end of the world

im getting the vibe that all you want after 4 years of uni is a job (in those fields you mentioned)? so i dont know why you need the double degrees. what is the argument for doing them? if you just do your commerce courses, do well, get 1st class honours, then i dont see what you have to worry about when it comes to employment

(and seriously, why do you have comm/law on your list? you seem pretty dead set on going into some commercial fields. are you honestly thinking of taking law?)

Just pick something you'll enjoy for your second/ third major, that way you'll more likely to perform better in it. All those combinations are viable options for future employment in IB, finance etc.

Even if you regret picking the wrong double degree, you can always transfer in the second year without prolonging the time you will stay at uni because most of those programs have the same first year core courses.

I can't say much about honours, but if you can get into honours you'll most likely will be offered a job anyway.

Thanks guys for your great words of wisdom. I get your points.

In regards to Honours, what do you actually do? Is it heavily research-based?

Thanks everyone.

I think I will probably go with Commerce (Actuarial) + Science (maths + stats) - first choice atm....

Hmm guys I got a question :)
Im currently doing B Comm/Eco with most likely majors in Finance and Economics. Wondering what a good 3rd major would be to supplement my studies in Finance (aiming towards a career in investment banking/trading).

Right now im juggling between Accounting (not a whole lot of interest but it is a pretty easy major and probably will help me analyse financial reports a lot better) and Actuarial Studies (probably far far more challenging as I havent done 4U and would most likely need to do the two first year math cores which means I wasted 12 credit points). Also had a look at Financial Economics but that just looks like an Eco major in disguise to me...

Would doing an actuarial major greatly increase my employability in finance? Or doing fairly well in Finance is already sufficient? (Like distinction+)

I would go for accounting/finance/eco just because it opens more opportunities you manage to get CA or CPA. As long as you get good marks, you'll be fine.

I know that this question is not really related to the original question but on average, how many hours did you study per week for commerce (actuarial studies) with another degree?

I do actuarial/maths/stats:

Non actuarial commerce courses (aka acct+econ): Just do homework.... rest can be crammed b4 assessments. So on avg around 1-2 hours

Actuarial commerce courses: Homework+readings+re-reading lecture notes until material is completely understood.... so avg 4-5 hours

Maths: practice ,practice, practice many questions from many sources .... so avg 4-5 hours

Note a lot more time is dedicated when assessments are due

yea i agree with cyl.

Commerce courses are easy, only one or two hours to finish the tutorial homework, although the reading may take some time.

Math courses: 3~4 hours of doing the tutorial hw each week which should be enough. More hours for revision before class quizes. Not as much reading as commerce courses.

Pretty sure bankers dont really care where you come from so long as you have some knowledge of contemporary issues and can answer basic questions about financial models.

That being said, I think Actuarial Studies itself would suffice. completing the degree would already scream tonnes of natural talent as well as a good work ethic, so imo i think a double with it would seem like a waste of time tbh.

I do Commerce (Actuarial, Finance) doubled with Economics (Economics) and it goes pretty good.

I was considering Commerce (Actuarial, Finance)/Science (Maths) but the maths seemed pretty hectic and I found I really enjoyed Economics anyway.
what's the difference between commerce and economics? thanks
