What is considered too early? (1 Viewer)

Hi, I am currently in my last year at uni in the UK doing economics. I plan to do a masters degree in Australia(improved version of the UK, imho) and I wish to start semester 1 2011...so february march...I plan to apply to some of the Go8's, and I was wondering if I can do this around december 2009 or january 2010? Or is this too early? If I'm right, these unis operate on a rolling admission basis, which would normally make it ok, but still its more than one year away...maybe they'll dismiss my application? Oh, and since i'll be an international student, will it be easier for me to get accepted? Not undermining Aus educational system, it's just what I've heard...
Also, for a guy who's half greek half swedish, speaks english like an american:mad1:, white...will there be any sort of ''racism'' towards me? just to know if i'll have to beat anyone up :burn:...

it's way too early. applications have only just opened for january '10.

i'm assuming that graduate works the same as undergraduate, correct me if i'm wrong.

go to The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) processes applications for higher education study at participating Australian institutions. for the nsw/act admissions site, i'm not sure of the ones in the other states and they should give you the relevant information.

It's way too early. Don't worry about racism. There's more racism towards minority races here. Usually the entry levels for international students are set lower than local students. This is partly because international students pay about 2.5-3 times more (for Commerce courses) than local students

What I meant by racism...my accent is like that of an american, am I gonna have trouble getting to know people? I mean, are australians as nationalist as the english? because in england, if you're not english people seem reluctant to talk to you...hmm

On the uni websites it doesn't state any opening dates..only closing dates. Tht's why I assumed they operated on a rolling admission basis. Is that assumption false? Also, keep in mind that this is for a masters degree, so applications go directly to the department in question. Not through UAC, I believe. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Most universities receive applications through UAC (for NSW/ACT), VTAC (Victoria) and QTAC (Queensland). I believe UWA is a Go8 and I know you can apply directly to them. I think University of Adelaide is one as well, but I can't remember the South Australia acronym, maybe SATAC.

Basically the way this works is that about early August in the year prior to your study applications open. You have options to choose between the types of degree you are doing.

Many universitites (I believe) accept direct applications for international students, because they want international students (money).

If I were you I would wait until next year, and then maybe around march inquire directly to the university you are interested in.

This may give you a decision earlier (which is probably important for you because you have to come over here and know where you going to live) and I think it would be easier to deal with admissions vs. UAC.

I don't know, but its going to be too early now. Wait until 2010.

you shouldn't have any problems tbh. 'racism' in australia is hyped up a fair bit by the international media but it's not that really that big an issue. as for your accent, i can't see it causing any problems - any residual dislike of americans is probably more to do with behaviour than accent, so if you're not loud and obnoxious then you'll get along fine.

If you already know where and what you will be applying for, I would sign up for the email lists of each of the uni's (Postgrad section of course). This way you won't miss out when applications for your relevant intake DO open.
