What is everything that one should consider when comparing universities? (1 Viewer)

I will be moving from rural NSW to either Adelaide, Perth or Sydney but since I've never been to a university before, I have no idea what I should be comparing! I'm in year 12 but I want to get started now so I can make an informed decision.

I made a separate thread for that (should I have combined them?). I am interested in studying petroleum engineering.

If the destination you're going to move mainly relies the fact you want to do petroleum engineering it would be a good decision to go WA and do the course at UWA since thats where the majority of australia's oil industry is located at.
However UNSW and UOA are also both good for petroleum engineering.

Have a glance at rankings, ATAR cutoffs, reputations for particular courses at particular universities via the internet, etc. Ranks, etc are obviously not the be all and end all, however is a reason why courses at USYD, UNSW are more popular than UWS for example...

Have a look on Uni websites and see what the courses actually offer in terms of content.

If you're in one of those cities during the next 12 months, head to the universities in the area and have a look around campus. Try and head to an Open Day if you can...obviously a little hard from rural NSW though.

Definitely have a look around at the campuses and the uni-social life there because a lot of your success at uni is going to come down to whether or not you even enjoy being there or care enough about being there.

The MyUniversity website does a great job of comparing the academic and employment statistics across the different universities you might be interested in studying. It also includes a student vote as to their enjoyment/satisfaction of teach in particular courses.

In Sydney, USYD and MQ have a great social life, UNSW has a good one too. From what I've seen of my mates in Adelaide, they have a great time at the Uni of Adelaide.

In Canberra, ANU definitely has a fantastic social life (and the uni generally is renowned for being the top uni in Australia).

All of the unis I've mentioned have pretty top-tier academic standards, but you'll need to get an answer from someone who does petroleum engineering for a more detailed answer. These are just general things to consider.

probably are dude, they have a large number of other societies dedicated to nothing but throwing BBQs and parties + their uni parties are pretty sick lol

MQ Bsoc needs some work though lol

- Content of the course and unique units they might have
- Teaching staff
- Facilities
- Student housing
- Scholarships
- Social life
- Atmosphere of the university
- Graduation rate
- Employment rate

Is there anything else I should be considering? I don't want to miss anything!

Which Business society?? ECFS, FBE Base etc? We don't have a "Bsoc"

But i'm assuming you mean ECFS. ECFS throws party events that are off the chain every now and then. But other than that they are no good.
UNIT>ECFS for serious/more noteworthy affairs.

The only other noteworthy parties are the UBAR parties which are themed. I'm sure every uni has something similar.

Our Actuarial society ASSOC are expert BBQers. Once you come out of ASSOC you'll be a certified BBQ expert. (srs no one will fk with you)

The only serious/extreme society worth being in is AIESEC who won best student society of the year. AIESEC is evident in most universities but no university takes AIESEC as serious as MQ uni. I.e. every single member puts in their soul in running it like an actual professional organisation.

AIESEC @ Mq is filled with Actuarial/AppFinance & Commerce/law students. But AIESEC is not specifically a business society..
