heyy,
did anyone else's school cancel the trial exams completely? or replaced with an alternative task? i'm so confused at the moment and i just want to know what is it like in other schools. also, i would appreciate suggestions of what good alternative task 4's would be that isn't so easy that everyone gets 100% and can still differentiate ranks. i think this situation is so detrimental to students who, the trial exam is their last and only hope to boost shit ranks :/. i think online exams is a bad idea too because then it becomes less about academics and more of a cheating contest.

easy full marks is the same thing as cancelling trials completely. aside from essential hsc prep, trial exams are used to really reward students who study super hard by boosting their internals significantly. many students rely on this to get good rankings. what if a student has had a bad task and needs trials to recover from it? that's what makes me annoyed... having hope i could recover my ranks but now there wouldn't be a way to since everyone is ranking 1st.

i wonder how covid wil affect the distribution of atars... since generally it is selective schools who do the best in the hsc. but this time around selective schools are the most disadvantaged because they have so many kids from different lgas that would be so difficult to plan anything besides cancelling trials and estimating marks/bumping up other tasks

They would also be getting time to get heaps of study done at home. I know some friends in year 12 who are also locked down who have said that if it wasn't for lockdown they wouldn't have gotten through even half as many trial papers as they have by now. And, considering selective schools are going to have kids who are generally just smart, who would have covered all the content by now, this would probably be perfect for a "trial, full-day, extreme study marathon session".

covid was the way to nerf the selective kids

true, heaps of study time is good. but remember there is still content to be learn after trials that would not get covered properly because there is no time between end of trials and grad.

Im under the assumption that selective schools would have covered all the content, and they would have, they are after all...selective schools. If anything, this is going to widen the gap between the better more studious kids and the less so, from the year 12s above, this seems to be the case.

no, we haven't, we have completed 3/4 of the course, except for english. i agree with everything you say though. but it does provide an opportunity for everyone to be more balanced, in a way?

How the hell!?!?! My apologies, the girls in the year above said they have, damn. I sit corrected.
But yeah, I wonder how it would be for people who live in rural areas who might have to lockdown, I feel like they would be put under a fair bit of a disadvantage, but who knows, maybe they need extra time to smash out trial papers? Each to their own, I personally think staying at home helps me get way more done than at school, so if this happened next year, id have no complaints

ahahha don't apologise, every school goes at different paces ;) idk i feel like what i was meant to say was that everyone here is in a disadvantagous situation, but it relies much more on you now? like you have to work harder than ever since a lot of people began slacking off... hmm i don't know

Fair enough, I still feel like its a 'widening' of the gap between students. I was reading the news this morning, and even rural areas are getting into lockdowns, which means the gap of knowledge and sheer grinding between selective school studious kids/general studious kids vs the rest of everyone is gonna be slightly exacerbated. Although it shouldn't be that significant, I'm sure if someone is determined to get a high atar, they most likely won't be put off by lockdowns and stuff. Who knows?
