Hey all,

I'm quite confused in how to approach this essay from 2010 HSC Standard English:

Question 1 — Elective 1: Distinctive Voices (20 marks)
(a) Prose Fiction – Marele Day, The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender

Compare the ways distinctive voices are created in The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender and in ONE other related text of your own choosing.

Is it asking to compare the two texts, or compare the characters/themes in the core text, and related text seperately?

Thanks!

It's asking you to do both, I would imagine

ALL year 11 and year 12 essays require you to compare texts, so obviously you have to compare the texts anyway.

Normally you pick a theme for your essay. E.g. Voice. Then you choose the characters that help illustrate your argument. You can also compare the character's different point of view in relation to voice. Remember to choose at least 2 characters from each text so that your response isn't only based on one character and you are addressing humanity in general (as the writer creates the character), not just the character.

The question basically means what you see from it. Whatever you think its asking, then write a response from that
