That's fine. Look at the plan and see what other courses you can do. Maybe do some more commerce flexi-core courses or something.

Or take COMP1911 or MGMT1001 because they're offered in both semesters.

so you're saying i should go down to Comm/Sci and do 1131 and 1231 and get high GPA and get back into Comm/Sci(adv maths)? OR are you talking specifically about my WAM for the specific maths subject? e.g. if i'm doing MATH1131 and 1231 instead of 1141 and 1241 then i should be getting WAM of 80 instead of 70?
I don't know who you're talking to.. but, you take Comm/Adv Maths first up if you can. Because it's hard to transfer.

IF you don't take Adv Maths - you need 80 WAM to transfer in - on your maths subjects. And then you just need 70 overall to stay in.

sorry shadowdude, was just replying to Kingportable on the part about math1131 and 1231 and such

so will the fact that im 2 semesters behind maths have any effect on my 2nd year maths when i reach it? probably the last question i ask since almost everything is clear now. I could decide to defer as well which would make this so much simpler but what would i spend those precious 2/3 year on.......... work experience since i have none? idk.

It just means you'll have to start 'level 2 maths' in 2014. Or, you can take 1151 in the upcoming semester and then 1251 in summer school - and then be ready for level 2 maths for 2013.

When you reach 'level 2 maths' - you would've done the prerequisites already. They won't allow you to enrol if you haven't done prerequisites.

MATH1251 aint offered in summer school, and the only option in summer school is to take MATH1231.

Hmm, you're right.

Well, if you want to do Actuarial - I believe MATH1151/1251 is a must. So I guess that means semester 2, 2013, no maths for you - unless you do something like.. MATH1081.

There's pretty much no difference between 1131/1231 and 1141/1241, so you're going to do 1141/1241 then consider taking 1131 next semester and 1231 during the summer. That is, if you have time in the summer.

I just read over the handbook again and found out that out of those 5 years i had a compulsory honours year to complete as well
If i don't want honours in maths then would that mean i would go down to Comm/Sci(Maths)? and If so will I still be able to do Finance/Stats with MATH1151 and 1251?

Yes, and yes.

If you don't want to do Honours - don't take Adv Maths. Because at the end of 4th year, if you don't want to take Honours - they automatically drop you down to Comm/Sci.

Awesomeness! So if i know i don't want honours then do i tell UNSW that soon? lol
What's the difference between honours and no honours when i look for a job to become an investment banker? Does the level of maths i complete matter?

If you don't want Honours and you know it now - take Comm/Sci.

And I don't know about your last question.

Con you do Adv. Science with commerce or engineering combined or only normal science ???
Advanced Science only gets offered with Social Science or Arts or Music, I believe.

Comm/Advanced Maths is possible, there is no Adv. anything/Engineering.

Check the handbook - though it's very confusing at times. You can do Comm/Sci and Engineering/Science (I think that's only for Elec. Eng) but not at the advanced level.

Best bet is to call up the uni or look through the UAC guide and see if they offer what you want.

You can get permission to replace 1151/1251 with 1131/1231 if you are a midyear entry so that you don't get too far behind with the maths. But 1131/1231 are quite a bit easier than 1151/1251 so they aren't as good preparation for 2nd year higher. Go and have a chat to John Steele in Maths who usually gives good advice about what to do when.

John Steele is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Maths. You could also talk to the Director of First Year Maths, Peter Brown.

I don't think that there is any problem in not doing honours, but it will effect what gets written on your degree. For example, I don't think that you can get a BSc in applied maths, just in maths. QR might be more complicated.
