So if you want to pick up at a party or get to know more people, you would rather they say;

"Hey nice shirt, did you get it from Kmart?"

or do you want them saying;

"Wow you look nice in that shirt. You got it from GLUE, right?"

It's not materialistic, it's just being noticed. It's like if you wear a Soccer jersey, everyone who supports/plays Soccer will notice you in that jersey, whereas people with no clue will say "Wow that is a great <any sport> shirt!"

(P.S - I have no objection to gothic/emo losers and agree with your statement on that.)
