- Hospitality , only choose it if you want a career in the hospitality industry, it really blows and scales down ur overall UAI , theory is long and boring and workplacement really gets in the way especially in year 12

Hospitality dosn't scale very well, I think thats what dropped my uai down a bit.
The theory is long, but it isn't boring, I thought it was interesting and quite easy to learn. Workplace dosn't get in the way, its only 35 hrs in yr 11 (5 days) and 35 in yr 12 (5 days) so its not that much, and it can be fun. Also if your looking into a career in the hospitality industry choose hospitality for yr 11 and 12, because you get certificates, nd when you finish yr 12 you can move on to another course (i think it is certificate 3)

Also pick courses that you enjoy, because your more likely to get better results in subjects that you like doing, pick subjects that you can cope with, so many people i know picked subjects in yr 12 that they couldn't cope with and absolutely hated, but they were stuck with them.

"More likely" seems to be the key word here. I started Year 11 with Society And Culture and received 86% in the half yearly exam (which isn't bad ) but found it boring. So I swapped it for Modern History. And then found I hated that more except I seem to be performing better it in than Society And Culture.

(And now I'm stuck doing it for Year 12 -- eep!)

So the thing is, if you're undecided about which courses to take, take all of the ones you're honestly considering at first, and when you realise which ones are not suited for you, drop them. The school can protest, but they can't deny you your subject selections.

Hearing about a subject and actually being in it are two completely different hings. Go with what you feel would benefit you, whether it's for your UAI, or for your general happiness.

^^ i agree with trying subs, but of course it is hard if they are in differnt lines

give your subs a chance but if you hate them after a term swap~!!!!!! dont trap yourself into doing things you dont wish too do for the hsc

This may seem obvious, but when choosing subjects, look at ALL the subjects that you are interested in doing and then go and have a look at the work which is required in each subject, then u can tell if you want to choose the subject or not.

Decide what sort of thing you would like to do at uni. I didn't till late this year and realised that i chose subjects that i dont need. If you have your heart set on something in particular look in the 2004 UAC guide and see what the prerequisites are and choose those subjects. I would recommend that if you do not need science then well, don't do it. I chose biology and realised that it is useless and difficult because there is so much to remember.

PS if you need to fill up units with subjects you don't need choose the ones that you would enjoy or be esp. good at. That way it will be LESS stressful and MORE fun.

Yup, what Daria said is important. Originally I was opting for Psychology, but last term I got it in my head that doing Medicine wouldn't be too bad (if I managed to get it). Unfortunately, I don't take Chemistry(which is recommended, I think). And so I was beating myself up about whether or not to take it next year in a condensed course through TAFE.

The things is, whilst it's good to talk to the teachers, remember that they can be extremely biased without meaning to, so it's good to talk to someone a bit more neutral, like your Career's Advisor.

Get the information right and facts straight, because Year 11 is a time to have fun and enjoy school, and you don't want to be unhappy for 6 periods a week just because of one wrong decision.

yeah i agree with the bit of teachrs being biased .. but even though they are biased talke to them!!!! coz they can provide you with invaluable advice and ideas!
you just have to learn to not accept everything they say and intepret what they say.

Thats crap. Who says that Business Studies or Economics is a requirment for university? Most universities don't have required subjects.

You know you can even do medicine without doing chemistry and/or biology?

Go do some more research into the matter before giving advice.

My version of 'What you should and shouldn't pick for year 11 and 12 (reasons)'

SHOULD:
Subjects you enjoy- If you're interested in a subject you'll enjoy being in class more, listen more closely and have more motivation to study and do well. It doesn't matter if you think the course doesn't 'scale well' If you like it, and you try your best, you'll do well.

Subjects you're good at- People like to get good marks. If you pick Physics because you think you'll get a higher UAI, but you're absolutely hopeless at it and aren't really interested... wasn't the point?

Subjects that will help with your future career path- If you know what you want to do in life, or have a rough idea... then pick the subjects that will help you with that. If you want to be a Journalist, pick Advanced English, if you want to be a Marine Biologist, pick Biology. Makes sense... yes?


SHOULDN'T:
Pick subjects only because they scale well- Do you really want to sit in a class 3 times a week for 2 years, doing something purely for this reason? If you're not interested and you're no good at it, then the fact that the subject scales well means nothing at all = because it's unlikely you won't do well.

Pick subjects because you hope to get in a friends class- If you only go to class to socialise, maybe you should reconsider going on to senior school. Sure, talking in class is okay to an extent, but gossiping and chatting the whole time will not serve you at all. You're at school to learn, so listen and do the work. And also, if your friend is there to learn- don't distract them, it's not fair.

Pick subjects because you hope to get a certain teacher- You can't gurantee a teacher will stay on at your school the next year, or get your class.

Pick subjects because you think they will be a bludge- If you bludge in class, or go in with the attitude that you can sit there and do minimal work... you shouldn't be doing that subject. You're wasting the teachers, your fellow students and most importantly, YOUR OWN time.

I second that! Its a COMPLETE waste of time, Dont do IPT either, another waste of time. Those two subjects aren't ones in which you would want to do for yr 11 and 12, they're more the kind of subjects to accelerate in (9, 10 & 11) as a sort of trial for what would really count.

Suggested subjects:

Mathematics Extension I and later II:
Lets just say, if you're after scaling, this is the one. BUT be weary if you're horrible at maths, then don't do it. E1 and E2 can do wonders if you're decent at maths, unfortunately alot of people just end up having a heap of trouble and cursing it every single day

The Sciences: (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
In my opinion, they're the easiest subjects to get good marks in. Follow the dot points and you'll ace it! Especially recommended is chem. the scaling is the highest out of them all, and everythings relatively easy to understand and just a few mole calculations every now and then. It also assumed knowledge for alot of science related courses in uni

English Advanced over Standard:
Mainly because it scales better than standard, but also because 40% of the course is the same (AOS). For yr 10-->11, you might as well go advanced and if you cant handle it, THEN drop down to standard.

Economics:
Personally, i havent experienced the subject, but it would be good scaling wise and also in preparation for any economics related course in uni. Apparently involves alot of essay writing tho.

yes, the myths are absolute crap, do which ever english suited to your academic level.

basically do anything ext in something you enjoy.
remember you can drop in yr 11 and yr 12, but you cannot pick anything 2u up I think.

erm don't accelerate unless you're smart.

ah... don't do anything for the scaling. languages need quite a bit of commitment, and they don't scale well generally unless you do ext. you need to like the language to do well.
